**Position Title:**Community Culture Coordinator
**Reports to:**Manager, Culture & Language
Job Overview
Reporting to the Manager, Culture & Language, the Community Culture Coordinator is responsible for preserving and promoting the cultural heritage and language of the Haisla Nation community. This includes providing information regarding cultural protocols and the x̄áʼislak̓ala language; facilitating cultural awareness training for community members and the Haisla Nation Council’s staff; organizing cultural events and activities; and collaborating with elders and knowledge keepers.

The Haisla Nation is the band government of the Haisla people. Our mission is to build a powerful, prosperous and proud community, healthy in mind, body and spirit. We believe in building a strong and thriving community, with healthy and happy members and a sustained and prosperous environment. We are about 1962+ people, with approximately 532 living in Haisla (Kitamaat Village). We have lived off the land and waters of our traditional territory for thousands of years, and it remains the focus of all we do.
Duties & Responsibilities
Cultural Protocol & Language Support:
- Act as a point of reference for community members and staff on cultural protocols and language.
- Respond to inquiries about cultural practices, ceremonies, and traditional teachings, ensuring the information provided reflects community values and traditions.
Facilitation of Cultural Awareness Training:
- Develop and facilitate cultural awareness training sessions for community members, staff members, and external partners.
- Collaborate with Elders and knowledge keepers to ensure training programs reflect traditional knowledge and practices.
Coordination of Cultural Events & Programs:
- Plan and coordinate monthly cultural events, workshops, and activities such as storytelling, traditional crafts, and ceremonies.
- Plan and coordinate larger community events, such as Truth and Reconciliation and Indigenous Day.
- Manage event logistics including scheduling, venue preparation, and coordination of materials and resources.
Community Engagement:
- Build and maintain strong relationships with community members, Elders, and cultural leaders to foster the sharing of traditional knowledge and practices.
- Gather local histories and images to update Saksiwa and develop a Saksiwa 2.
- Serve as a liaison between the community and external partners to promote cultural awareness and understanding.
- Reply to requests from the community and stakeholders in a timely manner.
- Participate as a role model in schools and other organizations for drum/dance as requested and if it does not interfere with other job duties (honoraria to be directed to the Culture & Language program).
Documentation & Preservation of Cultural Knowledge:
- Develop a contact list for hereditary leaders and act as a liaison for requests.
- Develop a contact list for Elders and act as a liaison.
- Working closely with Elders and knowledge keepers, assist in the respectful and culturally appropriate documentation and preservation of cultural knowledge.
- Develop and maintain cultural archives by collecting, preserving, and managing cultural artifacts, documents, and recordings.
Skills & Qualifications
- Post-secondary diploma (1-3 years) in Indigenous Studies, Cultural Resource Management, Education, or related field, or equivalent.
- 3 to 5 years of recent experience in program coordination, event planning or community engagement, or a related field.
- Experience working for a band government or Indigenous organization, including with hereditary leaders, Elders, and knowledge keepers.
- General knowledge of Haisla culture, language, and history.
- Knowledge of Indigenous history with formalized education systems, residential school and on-going inter-generational effects specific to education and social programming and familiarity with Haisla and Henaksiala history, culture, goals and aspirations.
- Basic knowledge of archival practices is an asset.
- Ability to work in a politically sensitive environment.
- Ability to manage complex and potentially contentious issues.
- Ability to lead by example and be inviting of the community to guide the important work of language and culture preservation.
- Comfortable working both alone and in a team environment.
- Strong proficiency in using Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and digital tools for communication and documentation.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Strong organizational and time management skills with an attention to detail.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills with the ability to work collaboratively with and influence a diverse group of individuals.
- Demonstrated ability to serve as a knowledgeable and trusted resource to visitors, public, and community members.
- Satisfactory completion of criminal records check (with vulnerable sector screening if relevant).
Salary Range: $30.35/hr - $33.92/hr
