What will you do?
The purpose of this job is to support the implementation and delivery of system-wide health science services through deployment of staff, provision of leadership and where appropriate clinical supervision in accordance with the standards of practice of both the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) and the appropriate professional governing body. *Note | Functional areas of health sciences may include – SLP/OT/PT/Psychology.
This position will be working in the functional area of SLP/OT/PT
Accountability This job is accountable for; Leadership and management of functional area staff and resources within the system; Responsiveness of services to the needs of schools; and Alignment of functional health sciences services and supports to identify system goals and Alberta Education Standards for Special Education.
Major responsibilities Defines and implements system-wide standards of practice for health sciences functional area and ensures on-going monitoring of the services provided. Develops yearly work plan for the services. Provides leadership, direction and support to the Supervisor, Health Sciences ….OR the Supervisor of the health sciences functional area. Assigns special projects and unique responsibilities related to the operation of Health Sciences Services. Recruits, selects, deploys, supervises, and evaluates staff. Develops orientation and mentoring programs for staff new to the system. Carries out disciplinary actions, up to and including termination, as appropriate. Develops and maintains a high level of knowledge and awareness of current theory and practice related to meeting the learning and behavior needs of exceptional learners. Provides leadership in the development of professional procedures and guidelines. Sets expectations and provides opportunities for professional growth and continuing competence among health sciences staff through encouragement of professional development activities, facilitation of regular staff meetings, individual consultations, and feedback, as required., Works to establish and maintain favorable working relationships between Areas, schools, public and private agencies. Provides a liaison to other work units and departments with CBE, other school boards, Government of Alberta and provincial association/colleges, as they relate to health science services. Responds to and works to resolve concerns and issues about the provision services to students. Collects, interprets, and provides information for the preparation of budgets and facilitates supply of human resource materials and equipment to staff. Undertakes special projects, research activities or preparation of reports on the request of the Education Director. Develops communication strategies, plans sessions to ensure accurate dissemination of information. Performs other related responsibilities as assigned to meet department and service delivery goals and objectives.
What are we looking for?
Education and Experience Master’s Degree in functional area of Health Sciences such as; Speech – Language Pathology, OT, PT, Psychology. Registered professional Health Sciences specific designation in good standing. 5 years of successful clinical experience working at a professional level in the Health Sciences field. 2 years’ experience in a leadership role is an asset. Experience in an ECS – 12 educational setting is preferred. An equivalent combination of directly related education and experience may be considered.
Demonstrated Skills and Competencies Knowledge of Calgary Board of Education and Alberta Education policies, regulations and expectations and programming standard for Special Education; Knowledge and understanding of disability specific programming models; Knowledge and understanding of adult learning and staff development; Competency in personal computer applications software; Familiarity with information systems related to student data such as SIS; Strong oral and written, presentation and listening skills; Strong conflict resolution and mediation skills; Critical, flexible, creative and systemic thinking; Knowledge of building and leading teams and a commitment to team work; Ability to foster an environment of creativity, diversity and innovation; Time management and organizational skills; Openness to embracing and leading change; Ability to work independently and within a leadership/school community team environment; Sound judgment, reasoning and perspective; Commitment to ongoing professional growth; Personal suitability.
