The Opportunity

We are currently seeking an**, Principal Mining Engineer** to join our Mine Economics & Financial Evaluation Team.

This is a permanent position.

As the Principal Mining Engineer, you will be responsible for responsible for building, owning, and continuously improving standardized cost models (opex/capex) for mining and delivering robust financial analyses (DCF, NPV/IRR, sensitivity and scenario analysis) that support strategic planning processes across Vale Base Metals including downstream process.

Additionally, in this position you will:

  • Build and own standardized cost models: Design, validate, and maintain enterprise-standard models for opex, capex, sustaining capital with clear input structures, traceability, and audit trails; ensure alignment to strategic planning calendars

  • Financial evaluation & decision support: Lead DCF/NPV/IRR analyses, scenario and sensitivity studies (commodity prices, FX, inflation, productivity, cut-off strategies), and option value assessments to inform portfolio and life-of-asset decision including downstream process

  • Strategic planning integration: Provide the economic backbone for Life of Business Plan submissions by consolidating cost/economic inputs from sites and projects; ensure consistency with planning guidance and corporate finance standards.

  • Assumptions governance: Establish and steward a centralized assumptions library (prices, FX, inflation, labor, energy, maintenance, productivity factors) with approvals, version control, and change logs; enforce model governance and documentation.

  • Model quality & assurance: Define QA/QC protocols (peer review, back-testing to actuals, variance analysis); maintain model dictionaries, unit standards, and data lineage to ensure reproducibility and auditability.

  • Risk & uncertainty: Partner with Simulation/Analytics to incorporate probabilistic methods (e.g., Monte Carlo) and produce ranges (P10/P50/P90) for key economic outputs where appropriate.

  • Benchmarking & continuous improvement: Collaborate with Business Performance to benchmark cost drivers across assets, identify improvement levers, and reflect realized performance in forward plans.

  • Stakeholder engagement: Act as the focal point with Finance, Strategy, Operations, Sustainability, and Technology to align economic assumptions and communicate results and trade-offs to technical and executive audiences.

  • Capability building: Develop guidance, playbooks, and training for planning teams on cost modeling standards, economic evaluation techniques, and best practices; mentor analysts and engineers.

About You

Education:

  • Bachelors in Mining Engineering
  • P.Eng/M.eng/MBA is preferred

Experience:

  • 12 - 15 years’ of work experience

Skills:

  • Financial or corporate economics backgrounds
  • Sound engineering principles with mining experience.
  • Effective communicator and active listening
  • Leadership experience proven to meet expectations
  • Safety and risk management knowledge and experience
  • Caring and respectful behaviors
