Summer Student – Data Analyst
About the role
The Canadian Light Source Inc. (CLSI) is a national research facility of the University of Saskatchewan. CLS produces very bright light to explore the nature and structure of molecules, and serves national and international users from academia, industry, and government institutions.
The Canadian Light Source (CLS) is seeking a Summer Student to support the development of centralized reporting tools that enhance transparency and efficiency across the organization. This role will focus on building reports that consolidate project hours, employee hours, and budgeting information into a consistent and accessible format. Working closely with the supervisor of the role, the student will build upon existing models and workflows to deliver customized reports for managers, executives, and project leads. This position offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in data analysis, reporting, and business intelligence within a dynamic research environment.
Reporting to the Software and Data Services Manager, this position will be a full-time summer position starting on Friday, May 1st, and concluding on Friday, August 28th, or as discussed with the direct supervisor.
Representative Duties:
- Develop centralized reports to support CLS management and project management needs.
- Build upon existing data models and workflows created by Data Analysts.
- Create customized, user-friendly reports for managers, executives, and project managers.
- Ensure data accuracy and consistency across all reporting tools.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to gather requirements and refine reporting solutions.
- Document processes and provide guidance for report usage and maintenance.
Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program with a focus on data analysis and returning to studies in the fall.
- Experience with data visualization and reporting tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau) is an asset.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and familiarity with data modeling concepts.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with multiple stakeholders.
- Good communication skills for translating data insights into actionable reports.
**Remuneration:**Hourly rate is dependent upon current year of study (1st Year: $17.75/hr., 2nd Year: 18.43/hr., 3rd Year: $19.46/hr., 4th Year: 20.48/hr., 5th year: $21.50/hr., Graduate Student: $22.65/hr.).
