About the role
Our Mission at Enya
At Enya, we are building the education this country should have had from the beginning: one that addresses the needs of each and every person, honours their traditions, and accommodates their needs instead of the other way around. Shaped by our lived experiences, our team is turning this understanding into technology that uplifts the children the education system has overlooked.
With our first school district partnership launching, we need someone to pioneer the development that will define how AI serves learners.
The Role
This is a founding-level position with equity to match. You'll own our AI/ML development as we scale across North America, joining early enough to have a measurable impact on the company's culture, product DNA, and long-term value.
You're not implementing someone else's roadmap. You'll be creating it: building adaptive learning technology from the ground up and proving that AI can transform outcomes for students the system has failed.
This role pays $90,000 to $110,000 CAD base + equity . You'll report directly to the CTO as a core member of leadership.
We're building for people who measure success differently. The chance to shape an AI practice from scratch. To see your work change how thousands of students learn. To look back in five years and know: "I built that."
What You'll Do
Build Adaptive Learning Technology
- Own the AI/ML product: Work with LLMs, RAG, Deep Knowledge Tracing, and frontier technologies to build features that adapt to each student's needs in real time, and create IP assets for the company.
- Scale infrastructure: Build the data pipelines, model training systems, and deployment architecture for a world class adaptive learning platform.
- Ship innovation: Develop capabilities like personalization agents, predictive adaptive assessments, and automated content generation that actually works in classrooms.
Shape the Technical Direction
- Define the roadmap: Establish Enya's AI/ML priorities and translate personalized learning from marketing speak into defensible technology.
- Stay on the frontier: Read, evaluate, and implement the latest research. Build on cutting-edge work with the ambition to contribute original innovations that compete at the frontier of AI development.
- Collaborate cross-functionally: Work closely with the Director of Curriculum & Instruction and Product team to ensure AI features are pedagogically sound and ethically deployed.
Lay the Foundation for Growth
- Set the technical bar: As we grow, you'll help define what the standard looks like and mentor future team members.
- Ensure quality: Build technology that serves students, not just impressive demos.
What You Bring
Must-Haves
- Research Literacy: You can read a paper from NeurIPS or ICML and implement it in code. You understand the math behind the models, even if you haven't published papers yourself.
- Technical Depth: Strong expertise in LLMs and proficiency in Python and major ML frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow). You understand the full ML lifecycle from data exploration to production deployment.
- Stack Agnostic: While your focus is Python/AI, you are willing to dive into our Java Spring Boot backend to ensure your models connect seamlessly to the product. You value shipping a complete feature over staying in one language.
- Founding Mindset: You're comfortable with ambiguity. You'd rather build than wait for someone else's plan. You can make high-impact technical decisions with limited resources and move fast with a scrappy team.
Bonus Points
- Experience with RAG and Deep Knowledge Tracing systems.
- Background in educational data (sparse data, long-term efficacy measurement).
- Infrastructure engineering experience.
- You've worked with school districts or education ministries and understand how these systems actually function.
Why You'll Love This Role
- Real Impact: Your work will shape how thousands of students learn. You're not optimizing ad click-through rates.
- Mission Alignment: You'll work with people who actually care about equity and serving kids the system has failed.
- Research Meets Reality: You get to prove that AI can scale beyond theory and make a measurable difference in children's lives.
- Flexibility: Remote-first. Work from anywhere in Canada.
- Ownership: Founding-level equity in a company at the beginning, with a team that wants to build something that matters.
Why This Might Not Be a Fit
We believe in radical transparency. Here is when this role might not be right for you:
- You need structure: We're an early-stage startup. If you need the processes of a large tech company to do your best work, this will be frustrating. We are building our processes as we go. You need to be the kind of person who creates structure where there is none, rather than waiting for it to be given to you.
- You are execution obsessed: This isn't about deploying off-the-shelf ML models. It's about building adaptive technology that doesn't exist yet, often without a clear map.
- You need constant direction: We're a small team working asynchronously across time zones. If you need daily check-ins and detailed task lists, this won't work.
Compensation & Logistics
- Base Salary: $90,000 to $110,000 CAD
- Equity: Significant founding member stock options (standard vesting schedule).
- Benefits: Flexible remote-first culture (Canada-wide), flexible scheduling, and unlimited sick days. Extended health benefits planned.
- Employment Type: Full-time permanent position.
