Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking an Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer to join our Mining, Minerals and Metals practice in our Calgary, AB office. This position will work collaboratively with other Stantec offices across Canada, the United States, South America and Australia, to support the service needs of our clients on local and international projects, primarily on metal, coal and large oil sands mining projects.

As an Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer, you will be a member of a diverse, multidisciplinary team working in energy and resources, primarily on metal, coal and large oil sands mining projects. Work will include various stages in the project life cycle, from exploration and site investigations, through conceptual design, construction, closure and reclamation. Our geotechnical project work typically involves design and evaluation of mine waste structures including pit walls, mine rock and tailings storage facilities, and surface water impoundments.

Your Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities and essential job tasks include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Lead the planning and completion of geotechnical site investigations. This may include instrumentation, logging, sampling, and field testing.
  • Install, monitor and provide interpretation of data from geotechnical instrumentation.
  • Lead the analyses and design of earth structures, including mine pit slopes, waste disposal areas, and tailings dams.
  • Support mine and tailings planning groups in the development and design of large mining and closure projects.
  • Lead the preparation of technical design documents under limited supervision.
  • Generate and/or update technical drawings, figures and models.
  • Assist in the preparation of project proposals under limited supervision.
  • Comply with and actively participate in Stantec and client safety programs.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English (both written and oral communication). Proficiency in Spanish, French or Portuguese is an asset.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite of programs, CAD systems, and GeoStudio (or equivalent) suite of programs.
  • Work experience in mining or resource industries is an asset.
  • Ability to conduct work in a safe manner maintaining a high degree of situational awareness.
  • Applicants may be required to travel for field assignments with rotations of up to 2 to 3 consecutive weeks, with a potential total annual travel of up to 40% of the time (if required). Accommodations can be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Education and Experience

  • P.Eng. registered with Alberta Professional Engineers Geoscientists Association (APEGA) or Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC).
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in geotechnical, geological, civil or mining engineering.
  • Preferred between 5 and 10 years’ industry or consulting experience. Co-op or Intern experience is applicable.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License and satisfactory Driver's Abstract, per Stantec's Safe Driving Policy.

This position may have additional qualification requirements depending on work assignments. Additional qualifications will be defined in Project Specific Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Plans.
