About the role
Alberta Ballet is seeking an experienced ballet teacher starting in September 2026, with a possibility of some summer hours in July and August 2026 if desired. The position will be part-time hourly and will provide our community classes programming between September to June, and potentially summer programming during July and August.
Term Contract Dates: September 2026 to June 2027, with the potential for renewal thereafter
Schedule:
For September to June, classes occur Monday-Friday evenings and Saturdays (daytime hours). We are particularly looking for a teacher with availability on Saturdays and approximately 2-3 other evenings, as per enrollment requirements.
Summer camps occur during July and August (daytime hours). Some evening hours may also be available throughout the summer if desired.
Purpose: The Ballet Teacher will provide ballet classes to students of multiple ages and abilities utilizing Alberta Ballet’s system of training. Teachers provide students with quality instruction in a caring and engaging environment that promotes creativity and expression, joy of movement and music, and develops a lifelong appreciation for dance and the arts.

Instructional Duties

Plan and teach ballet or dance classes to students of multiple ages and abilities in the Alberta Ballet Classes program following the vision and goals of Alberta Ballet Community.

Follow the Alberta Ballet curriculum and system of training.

Prepare choreography for student performances.
-
Maintain appropriate staff/student relationships.
-
Attend performances and photo days as required.

Produce written assessments on student progress.

Record and report on student attendance.

Ensure a caring, inclusive, and inspiring environment.
-
Prepare students for R.A.D. or Cecchetti ballet examinations, if the teacher holds appropriate certifications to do so.
Non-Instructional Duties

Assist the school and students with photo days.

Attend/supervise rehearsals and performances which include the students.

Attend Year-End Performance (YEP) rehearsals/performances.

Attend staff meetings and training as required.
Qualifications & Key Competencies
-
Experience teaching a wide range of levels from six (6) years of age to adult.

Previous experience as a former dancer and/ or instructor with formal dance teacher training and/or certification.

Proactive and flexible approach to work, willing to be involved in all areas of the organization’s dance initiatives.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, able to build good supportive relationships with students, colleagues, and the wider dance community.

Flexible attitude towards duties and working patterns in order to fulfill the requirements of the role.

Empathy with and a commitment to the aims and ethos of the organization.

Willing to participate in teacher development programs when scheduled.

Ability to prepare choreographed dances.

General computer skills and knowledge of Office365 applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, SharePoint).
Working Conditions / Physical Requirements

This job is performed at the school in a variety of settings
- Teaching – standing for extended periods of time, repetitive movements, demonstrating dance
- Frequent walking, standing, bending, and reaching
- Speaking for extended periods of time, voice and speech indicating tempo, rhythm, and quality

Due to some computer usage, there may be repetitive motions of the hands and wrists.

As a performing arts organization, there will be projects and pursuits that may require time beyond the typical work schedule including evening and weekends for performances and recitals.

Employees are expected to comply with all safety regulations.
