Reporting to a Senior Manager of Engineer, the Gameplay Tools Engineer will be at the heart of the game creation process, focusing on building intuitive, powerful tools and gameplay systems that enable designers and content creators to craft rich open world experiences. You’ll collaborate with Designers, Artists, and Engineers across disciplines to design, implement, and optimize the systems, workflows, and pipelines that bring gameplay to life. If you love making the “paintbrushes” that allow others to paint and enjoy creating gameplay yourself, this is your role.

Your Responsibilities

  • Design and build tools that empower designers and content creators to craft open world missions, systems, and interactive gameplay.
  • Contribute directly to gameplay features and mechanics, collaborating with designers to bring their ideas to life.
  • Develop scalable workflows that make it easy to prototype, iterate, and deliver open world content at scale.
  • Collaborate across gameplay, UI, audio, physics, and online teams to integrate tools and gameplay systems seamlessly.
  • Analyze and improve pipelines and workflows, ensuring usability and efficiency for creators.
  • Document and share tools and features, mentoring others on best practices for gameplay workflows.
  • Stay current on industry best practices in open world gameplay and tools development, introducing new ideas to enhance workflows and player experiences.

Your Qualifications

  • 5+ years of professional software development experience with a strong C++ focus.
  • Proven experience building or maintaining tools and gameplay systems that enable designers/content creators to deliver open world or large-scale gameplay.
  • Solid understanding of workflows for gameplay systems, mission scripting, and world-building.
  • Strong debugging and optimization skills for tools and pipelines in a multi-threaded, real-time game environment.
  • Experience integrating tools and features into large, multi-disciplinary game engines.
  • Excellent communication skills, with a passion for supporting teammates and empowering creators.

Bonus

  • Experience shipping or supporting open world gameplay at scale.
  • Familiarity with Unreal Engine, Unity, or proprietary game engines.
  • Background in user experience design or human-centered tools development.
