Faculty of Science
University of Manitoba
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
Research Associate Position #: 26293 The Department Physics & Astronomy invites applications for a Full-time Research Associate position, commencing September 1, 2026 , or on a date mutually agreed upon and continue until March 31, 2028. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications with a range of $65,000 to $85,000.
The Research Associate will conduct independent research under the purview of Professor Michael Gericke’s research program. The research is in the context of the MOLLER experiment, a large-scale particle physics experiment that is being prepared by an international collaboration of scientists and for which the University of Manitoba SAP group has received about CAD 10 M in funding from the Canadian government. The research team are responsible for the R&D and construction of a large (several hundred) set of particle detectors as well as their installation in the experiment and their operation. This includes both mechanical and electronic design work, in-house construction and assembly of components, and extensive testing of the production detector modules. The work also includes all aspects of software and firmware development needed to read out the detector data and do the necessary post-processing and analysis. This position is a key position within the local working group. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the technical design and construction process and providing expert input and guidance for all stages of the development process.
The Department of Physics & Astronomy has a strong history of integrated teaching and research in areas of theoretical, computational, and experimental quantum physics, which underpins the operations of its three largest research groupings (Astronomy & Astrophysics, Subatomic Physics and Condensed Matter Physics). The expertise and capabilities of the Department’s 22 research faculty supervise approximately 90 graduate students, making it one of the largest graduate programs in the Faculty of Science. Research in the Department involves numerous national and international collaborations, including use of and contributions to large scale multi-year major facilities and in several cases, linkages to industry and generation of IP. Further information about the Physics and Astronomy department can be obtained from https://umanitoba.ca/science/research/physics-and-astronomy.
The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in Engineering or Physics, and a minimum of 2 years developing Cherenkov and HVMAPS detector components. Experience in CAD design, electronics design, FPGA programming, high-speed data processing hardware setup, mechanical assembly, software development and data analysis are also required.
Preferred qualifications include supervising students and some technicians, and so previous supervisory experience is preferred.
