Job Description POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY: The Children & Youth Coordinator will provide oversight to youth and children ministries programs (ages 0-25) and give focused attention to strengthen and grow the programs and attend to the spiritual growth and development of the youth, children, and young adults who attend the Korean Community Church and /or are from the surrounding community. In a cooperative team-based environment the incumbent will design and implement a holistic Gospel centered and relational focused ministry including but not limited to Christian discipleship, leadership development, community outreach and community partnerships.

Accountabilities Spiritual Leadership :

  • Contribute to the spiritual development of youth & children within the church and community by mentoring, discipling, encouraging, and modeling appropriate attitudes and behaviours.
  • Cultivate a “spiritual and relational leadership style” with youth & children, their friends, and their families.
  • Work as a key member with the church’s Pastoral Team providing pastoral care and oversight for youth & children ministries.
  • Conduct and coordinate Bible studies for youth & children, students, and young adults.
  • Prays with and or leads children/youth and family members to faith in Jesus Christ as opportunity permits.
  • Be willing to make Korean Community Church your home church, with the understanding that Sunday meetings attendance is an essential part of the ministry responsibility.

Children and Youth Program Leadership

  • Develop, organize, and mobilize a comprehensive outreach ministry for our communities, providing regular programs (e.g., organize and facilitate potential Summer and March Break Day Camps etc.) events that will connect young people that are not actively connected with any other church and those with our Community & Family Services ministries.
  • Coordinate and maintain (or when necessary, develop and reimagine) existing programming relevant to the youth & children of the church and community at large, including worship, fellowship, discipleship, and regular special events. This will include direct leadership of Youth Group, Sunday School, outreach programs and others.
  • Coordinate, promote, support, and participate in Divisional and Territorial youth events.
  • Create & coordinate outreach activities & pastoral care programs (including to parents/guardians of the youth & children, students and young adults involved in programs).
  • Network with other youth leaders, community youth organizations and schools

Volunteer Coordination & Leadership

  • Handle recruitment, screening, orientation and training processes for volunteer leaders, workers, and helpers. This includes holding regular leadership & team meetings.
  • Dealing with volunteer complaints and incident reports.
  • Prepare, post, and maintain all volunteer schedules in accordance with operational requirements ensuring adequate coverage for all program functions.
  • Prepare and maintain written records/logs of activities, including activity reports and statistical information in accordance with TSA guidelines and standards.
  • Provide direction and support to program volunteers ensuring that they work together to achieve the purpose of the organization and enhance the ministries of The Salvation Army.Must submit all pertinent statistics into The Salvation Army’s database (SAMIS).

Community Relationship Management

  • Participate as a member of ministry leadership boards
  • Assist in the planning of connection strategies and events as required to promote incorporation into the church fellowship.
  • Know and act in accordance with security procedures of the church to ensure the safety and confidentiality of participants and information.
  • Ensure that all duties are completed in accordance with the principles, standards, policies, and procedures of The Salvation Army.
  • Organize and hold fundraising events throughout the year.

Health and Safety

  • Maintain program storage areas (e.g., updating, safety, organizing, etc.).
  • Seek out continual education in food safety and health standards, including maintaining Safe Food Handling Certification.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.

Critical Relationship Management Perform other related duties as required

Internal

  • MU Leader, Corps members, volunteers, staff.
  • Attend/participate in staff meetings as required.
  • Serve as a member of the Corps leadership board.
  • Consult and work effectively, and in conjunction with, local and program leaders.

External

  • Local community partners and schools.

Managerial/Technical Responsibilities

  • This position reports directly to MU Leader.
  • Supervise and oversee volunteers within established guidelines.
  • Provide leadership/oversight for all current child/youth ministry activities and events.

Financial And Material Management

  • The successful candidate will be required to create a budget under the supervision of the MU Leader, manage, and stay within that budget, submitting all receipts in accordance with TSA policies and procedures.
  • This role is responsible for curriculum and program equipment.

Working Conditions

  • This is a temporary part-time position based on 21 hours per week.
  • Job duties will be performed in the Corps buildings for most of the time, with work being done in public spaces (coffee shop and parks) and camps as well.
  • Work requires a flexible schedule and will work evenings and weekends, as needed.
  • Required to handle garbage and perform clean up duties after events.
  • This job requires reaching, bending, and stooping frequently, working in a sitting, and standing position for periods of time.
  • Ability to lift/move objects/materials of up to 20 lbs.
  • Some travel is required, - 25% of the time.

Normal hours of work: The working conditions are such that to meet the operational needs of the job, flexibility in scheduling is required as it relates to hours of work and work schedule. i.e., meetings with youth at regular events or special events/appointments. Schedule will include evenings and weekends.

Education And Experience Qualifications Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Completion of a formal post-secondary/college program of one academic year in Biblical Studies/Theology, Bible College/Youth Ministry education.
  • Bilingual in English and Korean.
  • Additional education in Children/Youth work is an asset.
  • Proof of valid Safe Food Handlers and First Aid & CPR Certifications or willingness to obtain.
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License; personal vehicle and insurance is required.

Experience And Skilled Knowledge Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in Children/Youth leadership, with a background in volunteer coordination and strong outreach and discipleship skills.
  • Proficient computer skills in all aspects of Microsoft Office.

Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

  • Lead by example, by demonstrating a positive attitude, a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn and be flexible.
  • Must have good written and verbal communication both in English and Korean
  • Represent The Salvation Army in a professional, positive, and engaging manner.
  • Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution.
  • Solid grasp and application skills in social media applications (advertising, creating videos etc.)
  • Ability to embrace growing technology needs - able to post to social media platforms and aptitude to develop online communications.
  • Strong public speaking skills with the ability to preach a sermon or give a devotional when required.
  • Innovative - a proven ability to think “outside the box”, methods of outreach, discipleship training and other areas of ministry; open to new ideas, different contexts, people, and worldviews.
  • Confident, self-motivated, mission-minded, able to work with other staff or independently.
  • Fundamental Christian Counselling and conflict resolution skills are an asset.
  • Possess strong interpersonal and conflict management skills, including the ability to maintain appropriate confidentiality.
  • Understand, support; committed to teach and promote and be able to communicate and model the Mission, Values, sound Christian doctrine, and policies of The Salvation Army in Canada.
  • Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.

Compensation The target hiring range for this position is $23.28 to $29.10 with a maximum of $34.92.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
