Job Profile
The City of Cambridge is seeking a Road Safety Specialist to lead the development and implementation of its first Road Safety Review & Action Plan. This role plays a key part in shaping safer, more inclusive streets for all road users—drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists—through data-driven strategies, collaborative planning, and public engagement. This position directly supports the City's commitment to creating safer, more livable communities. Through strategic planning, technical expertise, and meaningful engagement, the Road Safety Specialist will help reduce traffic-related injuries and fatalities, promote active transportation, and foster a culture of safety across Cambridge.
What you will be doing
- Analyze collision data, traffic patterns, and road user behavior to identify high-risk areas.
- Recommend engineering solutions and standards, enforcement, and education strategies to reduce traffic-related injuries and fatalities.
- Use GIS and statistical tools to support evidence-based decision-making.
- Conduct field assessments of roadways, intersections, and pedestrian facilities.
- Identify hazards and recommend engineering or operational improvements.
- Design and implement road safety programs and initiatives (e.g., Vision Zero, School Travel Planning).
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of safety interventions through annual reporting.
- Collaborate with internal staff, external agencies, Mayor and Council, law enforcement, public health officials, and community groups.
- Participate in public meetings and respond to safety concerns from residents.
- Contribute to the development of road safety policies and strategic plans.
- Ensure compliance with local, provincial, and national safety standards.
- Develop educational materials and campaigns to promote safe road use.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Planning, Public Safety or equivalent education.
Experience and Knowledge
- Over five (5) years of previously related experience in traffic safety, transportation planning, or road design.
- Possess Road Safety Professional (RSP) (Level 1 & 2) and Road Safety Auditor certifications, or be eligible to obtain them.
- Knowledge of road safety principles, traffic engineering, road safety audits, and the Safe System approach.
- Proficiency in data analysis tools (e.g., Excel, GIS, collision analysis software).
- Strong communication and project management skills.

Proof of your current and valid certificate(s) and/or educational qualifications.
Valid G driver's license.
Worker Health and Safety Awareness Training certificate from the Ministry of Labour. (may be obtained post offer)
Your compensation
This position is within Grade 13 of the inside workers union Salary Schedule and has an annual salary range of $100,664 - $106,998. We offer a comprehensive benefit package and are an Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS) employer.
Hours of work
The current regular hours of work are in accordance with the collective agreement, however currently are 8:30am to 4:30pm (35 hours per week), Monday to Friday, with occasional evenings as required.
