Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer
Location: Dartmouth, NS
Your Opportunity
Stantec is currently seeking a motivated Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer to join our Geotechnical Engineering team in Dartmouth, NS. This position offers the opportunity to work on engineering and geotechnical projects in a multi‑discipline project team environment. In this role you will be responsible for developing cost‑effective, practical geotechnical engineering designs and construction solutions for our clients. This immediate need requires the applicant to have strong technical design skills with the communication and organizational skills to manage projects and act as a technical resource to deliver impactful projects that help shape and connect communities across Nova Scotia and Eastern Canada. Your Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to both interdisciplinary and geotechnical‑specific project teams by delivering sound and reliable geotechnical engineering recommendations
- Manage geotechnical projects of varying scope and complexity, spanning from transportation, residential, commercial, and industrial developments.
- Supervise field staff working on field work and testing which may include borehole drilling, test pit supervision, construction site review, rock anchor testing, slope stability assessments (rock and soil), and installation of instrumentation.
- Provide engineering design and assessment of geological and/or geotechnical systems involving foundation design, slope stability and settlement analysis, soil improvement, and others.
- Prepare proposals, geotechnical reports, and coordinate project specifications and construction documentation.
- Collaborate with senior engineers to deliver technical services in both field and office settings.
- Provide strategic mentorship and coaching to junior staff members.
- Communicate effectively with clients, geotechnical and project team members, and Stantec colleagues from across North America.
- Promote strong workplace health and safety practices.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Strong technical expertise alongside exceptional oral and written communication skills, complemented by advanced analytical and project management capabilities.
- Ability to participate and collaborate in a project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought.
- Experience in heavy civil geotechnical engineering applications including power, roads and highways, water and wastewater, tunneling and trenchless methods, slope stability, dams and numerical analysis.
- Experience with Pile Dynamic Analysis (PDA) and marine‑based geotechnical investigations are considered assets.
- Valid Driver’s License.
Education and Experience
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in civil/Geotechnical Engineering from a recognized university.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in geotechnical engineering design and consulting.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in good standing with provincial association or the ability to obtain the professional designation.
- Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
