Job Description:
Note: This is a Temporary Full-Time Administrative position for 1 year from date of hire. This position will require travel between the London campus (Oxford Street) and the Botanical Garden located at the Cuddy property in Strathroy, Ontario.
As the Manager of Fanshawe Gardens , reporting to the Dean, Faculty of Science, Trades, Technology and Design, and working closely with the Associate Dean and Facilities teams, you will be responsible for the effective operation, maintenance, and records of the College’s garden operations at Oxford Street and incidental subject matter support for the Botanical Garden located at the Cuddy properties. You’ll be responsible for planning, supervising, and guiding staff, maintaining plant records, supporting academic programming, and ensuring alignment with Botanic Garden Conservation International (BGCI) standards.
This role is a vital link between the College and the broader community—bringing together education, sustainability, and innovation in a dynamic garden setting. The principles of the Gardens are academics, community, and research. Your work will directly support academic programming, enterprise operations, and conservation efforts.
How You’ll Make an Impact:
- Lead Garden Operations : Oversee the daily maintenance and development of garden spaces, ensuring they meet high standards for both public presentation and academic use.
- Support Learning Environments : Supports the garden learning environment for programs and students’ goals.
- Champion BGCI Standards : Educate and support BGCI Botanic Garden Conservation standards within college frameworks.
- Cultivate Partnerships : Maintains and creates partnerships resulting in enhanced learning and functions/events. Key link between the College and the broader internal and external communities.
- Drive Financial Stewardship : Develop and manage budgets, monitor expenses, and implement financial systems to meet revenue targets and control costs for both academic and enterprise operations.
- Manage and Inspire Teams : Recruit, train, and supervise full-time and non-full-time staff including co-op students to support garden maintenance.
- Ensure Safety and Compliance : Uphold health and safety standards, conduct inspections, and ensure compliance with relevant legislation and college policies.
- Maintain Records and Resources : Use appropriate software to manage plant records, inventory, procurement, and financial tracking. Coordinate equipment servicing and repairs with Facilities and Operations teams.
- Stay Ahead of Trends : Plays a vital role in the identification of emerging trends and industry best practices and keeps informed of competitor college and university garden leadership models.
- Collaborate Across the College : Work closely with the Dean, Associate Dean, and Facilities Operations Manager to align garden operations with academic and enterprise goals in London and Strathroy.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary 3-year diploma/degree in Garden Management or related field
- Minimum 5 years of related, progressive work and leadership experience with garden leadership, ornamental horticulture, horticulture, agri-tech, greenhouse, and/or botanic garden environment conservation
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
- Greenhouse Management with Botanical Gardens Background, Licensing and Experience is an asset
- Supervisory experience with strong leadership ability
- Teaching or employment in a post-secondary environment is an asset
- Related computer software experience
- Solid skills and experience in human resource management, budget planning, forecasting, resource allocation, marketplace intelligence and a commitment to service excellence
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills along with client service skills and conflict resolution
- Experience in establishing alliances with business/industry partners
- Problem-solving, negotiating and project management skills
- Ability and background to learn about and develop funded research projects
- Valid Driver's license and ability to travel between Fanshawe locations
