About the role

Job Summary:
In accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Provincial Health Services Authority patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone at PHSA, and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position. In accordance with established policies, standards and procedures, the Perioperative Clerk performs a range of clerical functions such as data entry, maintaining of patient records, contacting patients, requisitioning supplies, typing and reception duties.

Duties/Accountabilities:

  1. Performs receptionist duties which include answering telephones, taking messages or answering routine enquiries, receiving patients and visitors; responds to queries and/or directs queries to appropriate area and/or staff.

  2. Contacting patients to provide them with non-clinical surgical information, such as arrival times, fasting times.

  3. Responsible for computerized scheduling, pre-registration and registration of patients. Processes patient registrations by documenting and/or collecting relevant patient information.

  4. Receives patients upon arrival to the unit, ensures patient demographics are accurate by confirming with the patient or guardian; admits/ transfers/ discharges patients using computerized Hospital registration system; notifies staff of patients arrival.

  5. Assembles patient charts and verifies all required documentation is included according to predetermined guidelines; ensures test requisitions, results and pertinent information is included. Requests and collects charts from Health Records; returns charts no longer required.

  6. Under the direction of the Surgical Suite nursing staff, facilitates adjustments and additions to the OR and pre-admission slate by gathering patient and perioperative information, coordinating other facility services such as radiology, and notifying all appropriate areas of adjustment.

  7. Maintains statistical records by compiling and completing daily data entry from all forms of perioperative documentation.

  8. Performs clerical duties such as data entry, filing, answering telephone, requisitioning supplies and maintaining related records. Notifies appropriate personnel of any equipment that may need repair.

  9. Directs patient transport, and/ or assists with the portering of patients, as directed by nursing staff.

  10. Accepts calls from staff regarding illness and absence from work and communicates information received to the appropriate personnel; maintains emergency contact list information and related records.

  11. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience

  • Grade 12 and two (2) years’ recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to keyboard at 45 w.p.m.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to organize work.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
