About the role

GEMTEC is a growing firm with offices throughout Atlantic Canada and in Ontario, and we are looking for a motivated and skilled Planner to join our Team. GEMTEC management understands that creative, talented employees are assets, and that investing in employee development is an investment in our firm. We strive to have employees that are multi-faceted and versatile with a variety of skills.

We currently have an opening for one permanent full-time Planner which can be based in any of our New Brunswick offices, or our Dartmouth, NS office.

About Us At GEMTEC, we offer something different. We’re an employee-owned, 400-person multidisciplinary consulting firm—not too big, not too small. We’re large enough to compete head-to-head with publicly traded engineering giants, but still small enough to maintain the culture and flexibility of a close-knit team. Our size and hands-on management style let us move quickly, embrace new opportunities, and empower our people to shape their own careers—without getting lost in corporate bureaucracy.

About the Role As a Planner at GEMTEC, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of communities within which we live and work. You will collaborate with our multidisciplinary team of experts, including engineers, technicians, and environmental specialists, to contribute to policy and development that promote built environments that are functional, aesthetically pleasing, and sustainable.

Other Key Responsibilities: Contribute to the development or amendment of urban and rural municipal plans, zoning regulations, and other land-use tools, such as development agreements and site plans. Prepare planning-related reports, such as planning rationales, urban design briefs, and/or market impact assessments. Contribute to the development of design concepts for public and private spaces, including subdivisions and municipal transportation corridors. Collaborate with interdisciplinary project teams to integrate planning principles into infrastructure projects. Conduct research and analysis to inform planning and other related decision-making processes. Prepare and present proposals to clients and stakeholders. Coordinate and present at public/stakeholder meetings, incl. associated travel and work outside of normal business hours. Interpret zoning regulations, and other regulatory requirements, such as environmental regulations. Stay up-to-date with industry trends and best practices in planning. Support business development and strategic planning. Review and contribute to technical deliverables prepared by other disciplines, incl. civil engineering reporting, geotechnical, environmental assessments, hydrogeological, etc.

Your qualifications and what you bring: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Urban Design, Planning, or a related field. Eligible to obtain Registered or Licensed Professional Planner designation. Member of Canadian Institute of Planners considered an asset. 4-6 years related planning experience. Proven experience in planning, preferably within a consultancy or similar environment. Proficiency in industry-standard software, such as GIS, SketchUp, and/or Adobe Creative Suite considered an asset. Knowledge of planning principles, planning policy, and zoning regulations. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex data and translate it into solutions. Excellent communication and presentation skills necessary to effectively convey information to clients and other stakeholders, including members of the public. Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team and advance and manage multiple projects simultaneously. Bilingual in French and English would be considered an asset.

The good stuff you get: Salary range of $70,000 - $90,000 per year Full time permanent salaried position Employee owned company with future potential to be a shareholder Year end profit sharing bonus Health and dental benefits Matching RRSP up to 5% Paid time off (vacation starting at 3 weeks per year and sick days) Office year-end closure (paid time off between Christmas and New Years) Work/life balance including a 37.5 hour work week and flexible working arrangements including hybrid options. Growth and development opportunities as we work on a large variety of projects so you can build your skills and experience.
