Area Of Responsibility Reporting to the Manager, Communication Services, the position is part of a team of communications professionals who provide expert advice and service to internal clients across the corporation. This role leads the development, management and execution of comprehensive communication and engagement plans that increase awareness of City programs, services and priorities.
- Serves as a trusted advisor to internal clients, translating business needs into clear communication strategies. Responsibilities include identifying target audiences, crafting key messages and recommending the most effective channels—spanning print, digital, web, social, audiovisual and other platforms. This work involves creative concept development, writing, editing and collaboration with the Creative Services and Production teams to deliver high-quality, on-brand materials within budget and aligned with corporate objectives.
- Engages with internal clients and external stakeholders to anticipate and manage issues, facilitate effective resolutions and provide professional support. Promotes cross-divisional collaboration and ensures the inclusion of key stakeholders to safeguard and strengthen the City’s reputation, with messaging that is clear, consistent and aligned with strategic priorities.
- Provides research and expert insight in the field of organizational communications, recommending best practices and innovative approaches to strengthen communication effectiveness.
- Monitors and reports on corporate issues in a timely manner, ensuring Council, senior leadership and staff are informed of project status.
- Plays a key role in establishing and reinforcing communications governance across the organization by promoting consistent, standardized processes. Ensures that internal clients are equipped with tools, resources and knowledge to effectively communicate and engage with their audiences.
- Participates in Council meetings to stay informed and reviews client Council reports with a strategic and issues-management lens.
- Responds to inquiries from staff, elected officials, residents and outside agencies regarding corporate initiatives and services, while contributing actively to the success of the broader Strategic Communications team.
Selection Criteria EDUCATION:
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in Communications, Journalism, English or related subjects
Experience
- Minimum of 5 years of organizational communications experience, preferably in the public sector
- Demonstrated experience in providing communications support to senior management and elected officials
- Experience dealing with the media on complex issues
Other Skills And Assets
- Asset if a member of International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) or a similar related professional organization
- Demonstrated success in an account manager or communications consultant position
- Understanding of municipal government environment and current issues
- Understands the use of technology and its impact on communication
- Solid English language usage skills
- Has subject matter expertise in the design and delivery of effective communications products and messages. Understands creative design and print, digital and web production
- Uses MS Office, email, internet and other PC tools
- Various tests and/or exams may be administered as part of the selection criteria.
