Associate Head - Distributed Education
Department of Family Medicine
Max Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba
Time Commitment: 0.5 EFT (20 hours per week)
Salary: $99,185.47
The Department of Family Medicine training program at the University of Manitoba is one of the most complex in the Max Rady College of Medicine, with the largest number of residents and is taught and administered at numerous distributed training sites throughout Manitoba. The Postgraduate Program consists of several Family Medicine streams, including Urban, Rural, Bilingual, Northern Remote, Integrated Care of the Elderly, and the nine (9) added competency Family Medicine Enhanced Skills Programs (ESP) in palliative care, emergency medicine, anesthesia, care of the elderly, sports medicine, cancer care, clinician scholar and women's health, and addiction medicine. Departmental centralized offices are located at the University's Bannatyne Campus, although teaching/precepting occurs at sites located across the province. Nearly 100 teaching sites are utilized throughout the province to support resident clinical rotations and medical student core rotation/elective placements.
Responsibilities:
This is a 0.5 EFT administrative leadership position at the University of Manitoba Max Rady College of Medicine and Shared Health Manitoba. The position is responsible for providing medical leadership of and/or input to support distributed medical education across Manitoba. The Department of Family Medicine associate department head, Distributed Education, works closely with the Department Head, Family Medicine and program directors within the DFM, to develop, enhance and support distributed primary care and family medicine education in Manitoba. Strategizing for the recruitment and retention of learners and faculty to support care delivery in rural, northern and remote communities is an essential part of this role. Within the Shared Health, Primary Care, Home and Community and Palliative Care provincial clinical team, this role participates in primary care capacity planning and linking health care recruitment and retention efforts to clinical service needs across the province.
The associate head distributed medical education will lead and collaborate with partners across the Max Rady College of Medicine, and with community, regional and Shared Health partners across Manitoba for the support and expansion of existing distributed clinical education opportunities and the creation of new, expanded and innovative educational opportunities for Max Rady College of Medicine learners outside of the major Academic Health Sciences Centers across Manitoba. The associate head works to link clinical services needs and health workforce planning with education and training programs. The primary focus of this work is primary care, family medicine and community experiences. Such programming will include rural/northern hospitals and physicians' offices and clinical teaching units with appropriate structures and functions to meet the educational and training needs for medical specialties and disciplines (family medicine and generalist specialties) throughout Manitoba. Optimal conssideration of interprofessional learning opportunities for learners and faculty in distributed sites will be key in the current and future development of this work. This work is closely aligned with the Max Rady College of Medicine's social accountability mission; community engagement is an essential component of this role and supports the Shared Health Clinical Planning work.
Qualifications:
CFPC certified, experienced Family physician, with significant rural experience, including clinical and leadership experience and a demonstrated distributed professional network across Manitoba. The incumbent will have experience of clinical and/or classroom teaching for medical learners including medical students, residents, MPAS students and/or trainees in the MLP-IMG program. Experience in interprofessional education, collaboration and team-based care is an asset. Community engagement and experience with professional organizations, including membership/participation with the Society of Rural Physicians of Canada are assets. An understanding of primary health care delivery in Manitoba is essential.
