About the role
The General Manager directs the safe, efficient operation of the rail network, ensuring high level of service and time performance for freight service. This position will report to the Vice-President, Operations.

Salary: According experience and Genesee & Wyoming Canada’s salary grid.
Responsibilities:
The incumbent will be responsible to:
- Lead the team’s safety process, ensuring the safe operations of the rail network, the safety of the workplace by implanting high level of safety awareness throughout all the departments and across the railroad.
- Manage, coach, and support a team of managers for different departments and crafts. Prepare and deploy annual Safety, Operational, Service and Corporate objectives.
- Direct and control the daily activities of all departments.
- Create, implement, and modify operating plans and procedures to ensure that activities are conducted safely and in conformance with accepted practices and guidelines.
- Establish appropriate service and staffing levels; monitors and evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and procedures; allocates resources to meet established schedule requirements.
- Develop and oversee administration of the team budget; assists with forecasts of funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Maintain, develop relationship and communication with customers.
- Participate on various management committees; prepare and present concise, accurate railroad status reports and other necessary presentations before executive staff.
- Investigate accident/incident with rigour and prepare appropriate documentation with ensuring proper corrective measures and action plan for implementation. Also, ensure a rigorous follow-up on those actions to be implemented.
- Participate in collective agreement negotiation and maintain high level communication with union representative and employees.
General Requirements:

High school diploma/College degree or bachelor’s degree in Operations/Logistic fields.

More than ten (10) years of railroad management experience, Locomotive Engineer qualification an asset.

Knowledge of Train Operations (strong background), Railroad Engineering and Mechanical.

Mid to advanced level of expertise with MS Office, Outlook with an ability to quickly learn additional software as required.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing in French & English to collaborate cross functionally with the rest of the Canadian region and its stakeholders.

A straightforward communicator with an outstanding reputation for integrity.

Familiarity with regulatory environments (CROR, FRA, US Customs, Transport Canada), labour standards, and occupational health and safety requirements.

Demonstrated team-building skills with a proven ability to develop proactive partnerships, lead and participate effectively in teams, and leverage diverse skills of team members.

Must be able to cross the US/Canada border.
