About the role

Position Description:

This position is responsible for, including, but not limited to:

  • Horticultural operations within Norfolk County’s cemeteries including grass cutting, leaf removal, tree and shrub maintenance, horticultural bed maintenance, storm damage clean up.
  • Restoration and repairs of plots, monuments and markers, within Norfolk County’s cemeteries.
  • Assist with opening/closing of burials within Norfolk County’s cemeteries.
  • Safe and efficient operation, care and maintenance of tools, equipment and vehicles (i.e. grass cutting machines, tractors, trucks, front-end loaders, water tanks and small equipment including all auxiliary attachments).
  • Perform daily circle checks on all equipment and reporting defects to the immediate supervisor.
  • Maintain daily written records of work-related activities.
  • Assist staff with repairs and maintenance as required reporting any defects to the Supervisor or designate.
  • Litter, brush and garbage pick-up.
  • Participate in the set up and take down of the required equipment and items needed for special events to include picnic tables, tables, chairs etc.
  • Painting and graffiti removal from parks buildings and structures.
  • Laboring duties include climbing, lifting, balancing, kneeling, stooping, walking, handling materials to assist in the maintenance of Norfolk County facilities and infrastructure. You will be required to work in an outdoor environment.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • University or college student enrolled in Horticultural Technician, Environmental Technician, Trades Fundamentals, Carpentry and Renovations or Recreation and Leisure Services (or a related field) would be an asset.
  • Previous work experience in landscaping, general building maintenance, horticulture, farming or other related experience would be an asset.
  • Valid province of Ontario Class “G” license and access to a reliable vehicle including the ability to provide a drivers abstract when requested during the recruitment process.
  • Computer expertise to apply Corporate software.
  • Must be able to operate a pickup truck, small equipment, and power and hand tools.
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Good time management, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience in general operation of office equipment, i.e. computer, photocopier, etc.

Note:

Employment is conditional upon: attendance at all training sessions, submission of required documentation/certification, adherence to the minimum age requirements and ability to meet the employment term

At time of application must be enrolled in a post-secondary education institution or institution of higher learning.
