About the role
Company Description Sugar Law Group is a commercial B2B debt collection law firm based in Toronto, specializing in accounts receivable recovery for business clients. The firm evaluates each portfolio to design tailored collection strategies that maximize recoveries in the shortest possible time. Operating primarily on a contingency basis, Sugar Law Group emphasizes efficient, results-driven collection, with clients paying only when funds are successfully recovered. The firm seeks to avoid litigation when possible but is fully prepared to litigate on contingency, including advancing certain court fees at the small claims level. When litigation is not recommended but still requested, the firm may proceed at competitive hourly rates and, where required, takes steps to enforce judgments and seize assets.
Role Description The Junior Lawyer role is a full-time, on-site position located in Toronto, ON. The Junior Lawyer will support commercial debt collection matters by conducting legal research, reviewing accounts receivable portfolios, and assisting in the development of case and collection strategies. Day-to-day responsibilities include drafting demand letters, pleadings, and other court documents, communicating with clients and debtors, and helping to negotiate settlements. The role also involves supporting litigation files in small claims and higher courts, preparing materials for hearings, and assisting with enforcement steps such as judgment enforcement and asset seizure. The Junior Lawyer will collaborate closely with senior lawyers, maintain accurate file documentation, and uphold professional and ethical standards in all client matters.
Qualifications
Legal research and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret statutes, case law, and court rules relevant to commercial debt collection. Strong drafting and written communication abilities for preparing demand letters, pleadings, affidavits, and client correspondence. Client service and communication skills, including the ability to explain legal options clearly and manage expectations in a professional manner. Negotiation and dispute resolution capabilities to support settlement discussions and minimize the need for litigation where appropriate. Organizational and time-management skills to handle multiple files, meet deadlines, and maintain detailed, accurate records. Completed law degree (JD or LLB) and eligibility to practice law in Ontario; membership or eligibility for membership with the Law Society of Ontario. Interest in commercial law, debt collection, and litigation, with prior experience or internships in these areas considered an asset. Ability to work collaboratively in a small firm environment, exercise sound judgment, and maintain high ethical and confidentiality standards. Proficiency with common legal software, case management systems, and Microsoft Office tools. Comfort appearing in court for procedural matters and small claims proceedings, or a willingness to develop advocacy skills in these settings.

About Sugar Law Group
We are a commercial (b2b) debt collection law firm located in Toronto.
We first assess each commercial accounts receivable portfolio in order to develop the most effective collection strategy for each unique situation. We then put that strategy into action in order to collect the maximum amount of money in the shortest period of time. We act entirely on contingency. If we don’t collect, you don’t pay. We avoid litigation whenever possible, but are always prepared to litigate if necessary. If viable, we will litigate the matter entirely on contingency. At the small claims court level we will even advance the court fees and disbursements. Once again, if we don't collect, you don't pay. If we do not recommend litigation, but a client still wants to sue its debtor, we may take the case at a competitive hourly rate. If necessary, we will take steps to enforce judgment and seize assets.
