Founded in 1968, Gateway Mechanical is a privately owned company that has established itself as a leader in the commercial and industrial refrigeration, heating and air conditioning industry (HVACR). Attending to 40,000+ service calls per year, Gateway is the largest HVAC & Refrigeration service provider in Western Canada. Our model is comprised of local branch teams with fully qualified personnel representing HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing/gas fitting, sheet metal, and electrical trades. These teams are supported by centers of excellence including professional engineers and project managers, which ensures Gateway’s full technical capability is available for every project and service call.
The Estimator is responsible for preparing, assembling, and submitting tender pricing. This role will be responsible for constructing, recording, and maintaining estimated costs and assist with the continuous pursuit and acquisition of all construction projects.
- Support the labor, equipment, and materials costing aspects of business development activity, including client interface, proposal preparation, industry research, team building;
- Own the estimating interface with internal clients for costing, schedule, and commercial matters;
- Coordinate the assignment of internal estimating resources to support the design-build and engineering technical support requirements of the sales & marketing team for customer sales interactions;
- Provide direction to estimators, including technical advice, coaching, and training;
- Source and coordinate internal and external costing and estimate resources as required to support design-build and engineering requirements where departmental resources do not exist;
- Coordinate with designers (internally and externally) to ensure the scope of work has been adhered to;
- As required, visit worksites and conduct thorough analyses of customer requirements;
- Review construction project plans, requirements, drawings, and specifications;
- Perform conceptual cost estimates early in project engagement;
- Manage drawing distribution to prospective suppliers and subcontractors to obtain bids;
- Ensure all estimates are accurate and have considered all risk factors with thorough contingency planning and quantification;
- Obtain labor rates, taxes, and insurance requirements, as needed for estimate development;
- Perform accurate quantity surveys for all types of construction systems and materials;
- Prepare quantity take-offs and cost estimates through all stages of design;
- Participate in client and third party reconciliations;
- Analyze and identify the scope of work from existing conditions, plans, and specifications through all phases of design and construction;
- Identify gaps in the scope of work materials provided and develop clarifying questions and lists of exclusions;
- Review designs and specifications for cost-effectiveness and suggest appropriate alternatives;
- Identify and input new or revised data into estimating databases to maintain accuracy;
- Present business proposals alongside the Business Developer and/or Territory Manager when required;
- Provide estimating support during construction activities when required;
- Establish and build relationships with engineering consultants, end-user customers, suppliers and operations;
- Track estimates presented to customers within the pipeline;
- Other duties as required.
