About the role

Your Opportunity:

The Medical Laboratory Technologist I in the Newborn Metabolic Screening/Biochemical Genetics laboratory at the University of Alberta Hospital is part of the Genetics and Genomics program within Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL). APL is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Alberta Health Services (AHS), delivering high-quality, responsive diagnostic lab services to Albertans across our healthcare system. The successful candidate will perform a variety of manual and automated Newborn Screening and Biochemical Genetics assays, with great attention to detail, accuracy and precision, ensuring quality results. Key aspects of this position include working in a team environment to provide the technical expertise for the testing area. Specialized techniques requiring competency include mass spectrometry (GC, MS/MS), high performance liquid chromatography and immunoassays. The successful candidate will maintain laboratory records, perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting of various laboratory instruments, verify patient/quality control results, participate in quality control activities, and assist with training of new employees and students.

Description:

As a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) I, you will be responsible for the daily processing, testing, results analysis and reporting of diagnostic samples within the laboratory department. You will perform a variety of routine and specialized procedures in the processing of specimens used in diagnosis, treatment and research.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Alberta (CMLTA).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Attention to detail, aptitude and proficiency in manual extraction and automated techniques is required. The ability to recognize testing/procedural anomalies and act appropriately to resolve these is required. Must have the ability to operate Windows. You are an organized, independent worker and strong team player committed to providing quality patient care. You understand and maintain a working knowledge of analytical techniques and demonstrate excellent problem solving, decision making and troubleshooting skills. You are approachable and reliable. Your communication and interpersonal skills enable you to deal courteously and tactfully with team members and other Alberta Health Services staff.

Preferred Qualifications:

Current clinical laboratory experience and knowledge in these techniques is preferred. Familiarity with Laboratory Information Systems and general computer application is an asset. Ability to do advanced maintenance with minimal supervision is an asset.
