Closing Date: December 12, 2026

A Research Technician I position is available at the McEwen Stem Cell Institute. The successful candidate will contribute to studies aimed at developing novel therapies for ischemic heart disease based on pluripotent stem cells. Working under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the Research Technician I will assist with the surgical delivery of the cell products in animal models (rodent and swine) of cardiac injury under the training and supervision of a highly experienced animal surgeon.

In addition, the candidate will support the work of other lab members by assisting in basic animal husbandry, treatment and care of multiple species of laboratory animals, contributing to regulatory approvals and reporting for animal research, maintaining equipment, checking inventories, placing orders, and assisting/coordinating other routine activities in the lab and animal resource facility.

Qualified candidates should have more than 6 months of prior experience in animal handling and surgical procedures in rodent and/or swine. They must demonstrate core competency in written and verbal communication as well as the communication and maintenance of records of experimental data.

Qualified candidates should be capable of working well with people from different disciplines and with varying levels of technical expertise.

Qualifications

  • At minimum a Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field, or veterinary technician diploma, or similar
  • A minimum of six months related technical experience (i.e. animal handling and surgical procedures in rodent and/or swine)
  • Experience with survival surgery procedures (e.g. thoracotomy, myocardial infarct induction, cell transplantation) in the cardiovascular system a major asset
  • Experience with the acquisition or analysis of cardiac physiological endpoints (echocardiography, ECG, cardiac MRI) an asset
  • Experience in routine cell culture and other general lab analysis techniques an asset
  • Core competency in verbal and written communication skills
  • Maintenance of well-organized records and documentation, inventories, data entry and analysis
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent attention to detail and meticulousness
  • Self-motivated and willing to accept temporary responsibilities outside of initial job description
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
