Primary function

The Disability Management Specialist will plan, organize, and co-lead the adjudication of LAO’s disability and attendance management programs, including short- and long-term disability plans, accommodation requests, and return-to-work strategies. Reporting to the Manager, Total Rewards and HRIS, you will collaborate closely with the HR Program Lead, Benefits & Pension Services to ensure consistency, accuracy, and timely processing of all claims.

Key accountabilities

  • Support the adjudication of LAO’s short-term disability programs, coordinate accommodation and return-to-work plans, and prepare decision letters.
  • Provide guidance to HR Business Partners, managers, employees, and labour relations representatives on disability and attendance management processes.
  • Consult with employees regarding available disability management services and their responsibilities in the workplace accommodation process.
  • Communicate claim status updates and return-to-work plans to employees and managers.
  • Proactively manage disability claims, including complex cases requiring nuanced solutions.
  • Administer HR system requirements and processes for all aspects of disability and attendance management, ensuring timely and accurate transactions.
  • Maintain accurate historical records and ensure compliance with record-keeping standards.
  • Stay current with workplace legislation and jurisprudence related to disability, attendance management, and accommodations.

Required skills & experience

  • University degree and completion of a recognized post-secondary Human Resources program, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Professional accreditation (e.g., CCP, CHRP) is an asset.

  • Strong background in administering short- and long-term disability programs, including experience managing complex claims in a unionized environment.

  • Proficiency in MS Excel, Word, and HR systems.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present information effectively at all organizational levels.

  • Strong conflict resolution skills and the ability to manage sensitive situations.

  • Proven ability to handle shifting priorities and manage multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment.

  • Demonstrated facilitation and collaboration skills to achieve results.

  • High attention to detail and strong organizational abilities.

  • Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality at all times.

  • Self-motivated with the capacity to manage multiple demands in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.

Legal Aid Ontario has a statutory mandate to promote access to justice throughout Ontario for low-income individuals by means of:

● Providing consistently high quality legal aid services in a cost-effective and efficient manner;

● Encouraging and facilitating flexibility and innovation in the provision of legal aid services;

● Identifying, assessing and recognizing the diverse legal needs of low-income individuals and of disadvantaged communities in Ontario; and

● Providing legal aid services to low-income individuals through a corporation that will operate independently from the Government of Ontario but within a framework of accountability to the Government of Ontario for the expenditure of public funds.

Our services

LAO services are carefully targeted to meet diverse client needs and make the most efficient use of our resources.

A wide range of services are available through LAO’s toll-free number, including summary legal advice for family and criminal law matters.

We provide duty counsel services - performed by staff and private-sector lawyers - for people who arrive in criminal, family or youth courts without a lawyer.

Poverty law services - such as helping people to obtain or maintain social assistance benefits - are delivered through a network of a number of independent, community-based legal aid clinics, funded by LAO.

LAO also runs a certificate program for the most serious and complex cases. Eligible low-income clients can obtain a certificate which is used to retain a private lawyer.
