Role Responsibilities

This role provides specialized regulatory implementation advice and technical expertise in greenhouse gas mitigation, estimation, measurement, verification and reporting for regulated facility emissions.

As a Climate Change Engineer, you will:

• Conduct reviews and assessments of reports and applications submitted by regulated facilities under Alberta's industrial greenhouse gas regulatory system.
• Perform complex technical assessments of facilities in a variety of regulated sectors and provide recommendations and strategies to resolve issues.
• Support Alberta’s Greenhouse Gas Regulatory System by developing and implementing reporting requirements, reduction standards, mitigation programs, and quantification procedures for offset credits and other carbon market instruments.
• Support policy development, assessment, and evaluation of key GHG mitigation technologies in areas such as renewable energy, energy efficiency, and carbon capture.

• University graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree combined with a minimum of 4 years of related experience is required. Preferred engineering disciplines include chemical, petrochemical, environmental and mechanical.

• Selected candidates must be or eligible to be a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGA). This includes candidates who qualify as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT).

Equivalency: Additional related education considered in lieu of experience on a one-for-one basis.

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

• Strong analytical skills with expertise in emissions and production quantification methodologies used provincially, nationally, and internationally.
• In-depth knowledge of industrial greenhouse gas emission sources, technologies, and accounting principles, including Alberta’s industrial GHG regulatory system.
• Understanding of air emissions data management systems, economic instruments (e.g., carbon offsets, emission performance credits), and carbon capture and storage fundamentals.
• Awareness of Alberta’s industrial landscape, including key sectors, operations, and locations, within provincial, national, and international environmental policy contexts.
• Ability to interpret and integrate scientific information using the latest methods, and present findings clearly to technical experts, stakeholders, and the public.
• Strong leadership skills to motivate and collaborate with colleagues, industry, and stakeholders to improve emission inventories and compliance reporting.
• Proven ability to work independently, in multi-disciplinary teams, and to lead specialist or cross-functional project teams.
• Excellent written, oral, and presentation skills to communicate effectively with government branches, industry operators, associations, and other agencies.

Notes

This position is based in Edmonton and works Monday – Friday, 36.25 hours per week.

Candidates with lesser qualifications may be considered at a lower classification and salary.
