About the role

Senior Research Assistants are normally graduate students, or University of Winnipeg undergraduate students, employed to assist in the execution and evaluation of research projects in their area of study. The positions may oversee Research Assistants in areas such as the use of proper techniques, analysis, and documentation.

Senior Research Assistants work under the general supervision or direction of more senior researchers or faculty members, and are expected to exercise judgment in prioritizing, planning and organizing their own work within defined parameters.

Position Overview:

The research assistant will help with data collection for various brain-imaging studies being conducted at the University of Winnipeg. The projects will utilize event-related potentials (ERPs) and/or functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). The topics of study will include emotional perception, emotion regulation, and emotion-movement interactions.

Duties:

  • Prepare equipment and materials for research.
    • Employee will set up ERP and/or fNIRS system prior to data collection, and will clean the caps worn by research participants after each study session.
  • Assist in data collection, data entry, analysis and interpretation.
    • Employee will recruit research participants using the SONA participant recruitment system. They will run participants through cognitive neuroscience experiments related to different emotional behaviours and will assist with data analysis. Participants may also be asked to assist with online studies using Qualtrics and/or Prolific systems.
  • Monitor and document research status and findings.
    • Employee will update participant credits on the SONA participant recruitment system and will upload research data to open access data repositories.

Qualifications:

  • Employee must be a senior student (3rd or 4th year) in Psychology or Neuroscience, or a recent graduate in these or related fields of study. Students must have completed at least a second-year Neuroscience course (e.g., PSYC-2900- - Physiological Psychology I) with a minimum of a B+ grade.
  • Employee must have previous experience working with either electroencephalography (EEG) or functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS).
  • Experience with statistical packages (e.g., SPSS or R), data collection programs (e.g., E-Prime, Qualtrics), and machine learning is an asset.
  • Comfortable working in lab rooms that do not have windows.

Condition(s) of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

The period of work will be from November 14, 2025 - November 14, 2026, and the estimated total hours of work will be 50-150 hours.
