About the role

Purpose As a key member of the Algoma Regional Renal Program, the Hemodialysis Registered Nurse provides safe, high-quality dialysis care by initiating, monitoring, and discontinuing treatments. This role ensures adherence to infection control protocols, professional standards, and safety regulations while coordinating and delivering patient-centered care. Working closely with a multidisciplinary team, the nurse develops and implements individualized care plans, educates patients and families, and supports their physical, emotional, and psychosocial well-being to optimize treatment outcomes.

Duties

  • Initiates, monitors, and discontinues prescribed dialysis treatments in the Hemodialysis, and Critical Care Units depending on patient’s medical condition.
  • Provides, as a member of the multidisciplinary team, patient/family education as it relates to modality selection, diet, fluid restrictions, and medication administration.
  • Understands and applies all infection control practices and precautions related to hemodialysis.
  • Practices according to the Standards from the College of Nurses and the Guidelines of the Canadian Association of Nephrology Nurses and Technicians.
  • Participates and collaborates with other health care providers in provision of patient care.
  • Effectively uses the Standards of Nursing Practice and the nursing process in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the care of the renal patient.
  • Understands and complies with rules and regulations, requirements, and procedures of the Health & Safety Program.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Certificate of competency in Ontario.
  • Current certification in venipuncture (I.V. certification)

Experience

  • 1 year experience in a Hemodialysis environment
  • 2 years’ experience in the care of acute medical patients

Skills

  • Demonstrated competency in Hemodiafiltration patient treatments
  • Experience with Critical Care patient hemodialysis treatments
  • Demonstrated competencies related to IV Therapy inclusive of central lines
  • Experience in the management and care of Renal patients
  • Knowledgeable in utilization and care of all mechanical equipment required for patient care
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills

Ability

  • Ability to use Meditech application as well as the Clinical Vision EMR.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain successful working relationships; ability to meet and interact with people in a pleasant, professional, responsible and reassuring manner, both in person and on the telephone; tact. Courtesy and alertness in public contacts.
  • Demonstrated behaviour consistent with Hospital Mission, Vision, Values and Standards of Performance.
