Job Specific Information**:**
Should this temporary vacancy be filled by a regular full-time employee, seniority and benefits will continue in the normal manner and the regular employee will continue to maintain normal, full-time status for the duration of the appointment.
If it becomes known that the position is permanent, it will be reposted and filled in the normal fashion.
Job Description:
POSITION SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of the Manager – Licensing & Enforcement and technical direction and guidance of the Leadhand – Animal Care Attendant, performs tasks related to the care, maintenance and well being of all animals in the Pound, and provides administrative support assistance for the Municipal Enforcement Services section.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs animal care services, such as feeding, shelter hygiene, vaccinations, dietary needs, animal enrichment, minor medical and health care treatments.
- Checks animals for signs of illness and/or injuries while performing work duties.
- Performs janitorial services such as sweeping, mopping floors, garbage removal, cleaning animal kennels, and general cleaning services.
- Serves public by showing stray and adoptive animals.
- Assists in administering content related to animal care adoption and return of animals on all social media platforms.
- Facilitates transportation of animals to and from appointments, animal transfers and any other external animal movements as required.
- Provides back-up support for processing payments related to the municipal animal pound, including handling both cash and electronic transactions,
- Provides back-up support for maintaining and issuing animal licenses and tracking records using case management software and applicable databases
- Provides back-up support for reception duties such as answering the telephone and responding to customers’ inquiries to Municipal Animal Pound
- Provides information regarding City animal regulations and responsible pet ownership.
- Liaises with other animal care groups, including rescue groups, shelters, veterinarians and suppliers, as directed.
- Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience:
- Secondary School graduation; and
- One year experience in the professional handling and caring of animals
Skills/Abilities:
- Excellent customer services skills and the ability to deal with the public in a tactful and courteous manner
- Must be at a basic skill level in word processing and spreadsheet software
- A Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Self-starter with proven organizational and time management skills
- Must possess and maintain a valid “G” Ontario Drivers Licence, or equivalent
- Must be competent within the meaning of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
Assets:
- Animal training or animal care certification
- Experience with animal enrichment
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Must remain a competent driver as defined by the Corporation
- May be required to provide a successful driver’s record (uncertified)
- Will be required to work shifts, irregular hours, weekends and holidays
- Must undergo a successful Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC)
