About the role

Legal Aid Saskatchewan (LAS) is seeking a visionary and values-driven Director, Indigenous Services and Relations to lead and advance our commitment to reconciliation, access to justice, and meaningful partnership with Indigenous peoples and communities across Saskatchewan. This is a full time, permanent senior leadership role for an individual who brings deep knowledge of Indigenous justice issues, strong relationship-building skills, and the ability to drive systemic change within the justice sector.

Why This Role Matters

In this role, you will:

  • Shape and lead LAS’s strategy for delivering effective legal aid services to First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples
  • Serve as a key advisor to the CEO and senior leadership on Indigenous issues
  • Champion reconciliation and lead LAS’s Reconciliation Action Plan
  • Act as a catalyst for justice system improvement and policy reform
  • Build and sustain respectful, reciprocal relationships with Indigenous communities, rights-holders, and justice partners
  • You will oversee Indigenous Services at LAS, including policy development, Gladue services, community engagement, and advocacy efforts aimed at addressing the over-representation of Indigenous peoples in the criminal justice and child welfare systems.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead and support Indigenous policy, Gladue services, and reconciliation initiatives
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with Indigenous communities, organizations, and justice system stakeholders
  • Provide strategic oversight and leadership to direct reports
  • Analyze legislation, public policy, and jurisprudence affecting Indigenous peoples
  • Develop law reform strategies and policy recommendations
  • Represent LAS on internal and external committees and advisory bodies
  • Guide communication and engagement strategies with Indigenous communities
  • Manage departmental operations, resources, and budgets

What You Bring

  • Strong knowledge of Indigenous social justice issues and laws impacting Indigenous peoples
  • Demonstrated ability to work respectfully and effectively with Indigenous communities
  • Strategic leadership, sound judgement, and strong communication skills
  • Experience in policy development, stakeholder engagement, and change management
  • Ability to lead teams, manage complex initiatives, and influence across systems
  • A law degree (LL.B or JD) and membership with the Saskatchewan Bar is preferred
  • Willingness and ability to travel within Saskatchewan

Work Environment & Location

  • The successful candidate must be based in Saskatchewan
  • Province-wide mandate with travel to LAS offices and conferences as required
  • Physical office location will depend on the candidate’s residence
  • Remote or hybrid work may be an option

Our team of staff lawyers and administration support adult and youth clients with criminal matters and family law issues. Full legal services are provided to clients who are financially eligible. Duty counsel service is provided to in-custody clients, regardless of financial status, at all 74 Provincial Courthouses and circuit points. Legal advice through the Brydges Line is available to those arrested or detained, regardless of financial status. Summary advice and information may be provided to anyone by a Legal Aid Saskatchewan lawyer about a wide range of matters if they involve no more than a brief interview or telephone call.

Legal Aid Saskatchewan has 14 offices throughout the province in the communities of Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert, Moose Jaw, Swift Current, North Battleford, Melfort, La Ronge, Meadow Lake, Yorkton and Estevan.
