Job Profile
Under the general supervision of the Arborist 2 or Arborist 3 and/or Forestry Foreperson, the Arborist 1 operates related vehicles and equipment, directs and instructs staff when assigned as a crew leader, maintains records, ensures public safety, and performs related duties in arboriculture and urban forestry operations.
As The Arborist 1 You Will
As a Crew Leader will work with, supervise and instruct a crew in accordance with established procedures and equipment operation and reports concerns to immediate supervisor. Be responsible for safe use and care of vehicles, equipment and tools signed out by self and staff under their supervision to perform daily tasks in accordance with safe work procedures, and to assist with maintenance and make minor repairs. Plant, water, prune, remove trees and chip trees/branches. Ensure quality and productivity standards are met. Submit reports, complete work orders, maintain time and equipment records. Provide input to supervisor on work performance of others under their supervision. Be knowledgeable of and follow established safe work practices, operating policies & procedures and ensure compliance personally and by staff under their supervision. Perform tasks of an emergency nature. Perform other related duties consistent with the classification as required.
Your Education And Qualifications Include
Senior 4 (Grade 12) education or G.E.D. (Generalized Education Diploma in Grade 12 equivalent) or equivalent. Must have a minimum of 1 year (12 months) relevant experience working in arboriculture and urban forestry related operations (including but not limited to pruning, chainsaw use, tree planting, tree removal). Must have successfully completed and possess the following: Chainsaw Safety and Tree Felling Chipper Qualification Level 1 First Aid Certificate Temporary Traffic Control WHMIS Ability to take and successfully complete additional courses and training as required by the Department, including but not limited to: Aerial Device Qualification Chipper Qualification Level 2 Computer training (job related) Customer Service & Communications Courses Dump Truck Electrical Awareness Fall Protection Emergency Response/ Aerial Rescue Ice Awareness Lead Hand/ Crew Leader Training Loader Operator Qualification Skid Steer Qualification Structural Risk Assessment (trees) Safety Responsibilities for Supervisors Tree Climbing Ability to supervise and instruct staff. Experience in the safe operation and maintenance of equipment, hand tools and power tools consistent with the classification. Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety regulations, policies and procedures, including the ability to adhere to and to enforce as Crew Leader. Ability to understand, execute and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to carry out the duties of the junior classifications within the Urban Forestry Branch. Ability to provide effective customer service and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts and the public Ability to establish work priorities and schedules and follow work through to completion. Ability to use computers, related devices and software such as Microsoft Office. IMPORTANT: Applicants who have been educated outside of Canada must have education which is comparable to the minimum qualification in Canada. Conditions Of Employment
The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid. Must possess and maintain a valid Manitoba Class 5 driver's Licence with the ability to upgrade to a Class 3 with air brake endorsement as required. Successful candidates will be required to provide a valid Driver's Notice in Force letter. In accordance with Legislative and the Department's requirements, this position requires completion of courses and possession of the following valid license or certification before appointment, as listed below: Must have successful completion of the Manitoba Arborists Certification Course before July 1, 2019, or Must hold a previously issued Manitoba Arborists License valid after October 1, 2017, or Must hold a valid ISA (International Society of Arboriculture) Arborist Certification or equivalent as recognized by designated authorizing body Must be physically capable of performing duties of the position. (e.g. capable of lifting and moving objects at least 50lbs). Must be capable of working at various heights, working outdoors in all weather conditions, have the ability to stand and walk for extended periods and over uneven terrain including snow, ice and riverbanks, and to work overhead and at heights for extended periods. Must be able to work various shifts, including: evenings, weekends, overtime and standby at various locations as needed.
