About the role

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health services to a population of over 1.15 million people, and to a wider population of 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.

The Role The ENT ward is a busy 26 bedded ward within the QEUH. It provides comprehensive in-patient services for patients undergoing varied types of ENT surgery and ENT treatment. The ward also has two emergency treatment rooms that provide a Consultant Led unscheduled care service provision. ENT is managed as a citywide service, with all in-patient care and unscheduled care provision based within the QEUH. For the elective flow of patients, pre operative assessment is carried out within Outpatients and most patients will present on the day of surgery to the Same Day Admission ward.

Acute Adult nursing care is provided for in-patients who may also have stepped down from the High Dependency Unit/Intensive Care Unit.

Base location - Queen Elizabeth University Hospital

Key Responsibilities Clinical and Specialist Knowledge:

  • Provide clinical leadership, developing innovative ideas to improve effectiveness and efficiency of care and collaboratively setting and measuring standards of care delivery.
  • To develop expert practice in all pertinent areas of ward.
  • Responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care for patients to ensure delivery of a high standard of care.
  • Demonstrate competency in professional skills and expand those skills to meet the needs of the patients.
  • Facilitate change processes within the area whether clinical or managerial in nature to ensure that the ward team foster innovative practice and meet patient needs.
  • Deploy and develop all staff to ensure efficient management of a rapidly changing and developing nursing service.
  • Co-ordinates the provision of seamless care for patients from admission to discharge by utilising efficient verbal and written communication practices with all members of the Multi-Disciplinary Team / Primary Care Services and Carers.
  • Ensure that all written documentation within the ward is clear, concise, timely and complies with the NMC Standards for Records and Record Keeping.
  • Establish, maintain and develop effective communication with all disciplines, patients and relatives to ensure the appropriate information is shared and patient needs are met.
  • Adhere to the organisational infection control policies and procedures and act as a role model in the maintenance of a safe environment.
  • Works within the NMC code of practice and professional guidelines.

Education And Research/Audit

  • Participate in ward and directorate audit activity where appropriate and Development of evidenced based practice as required.
  • Lead and supervise/mentor junior staff/students who are providing care to patients, and act as a source of advice to ensure their educational needs are met.
  • Develop the role by using evidence-based practice and continuously improve own knowledge.

Organisational/Managerial

  • Responsible for, the ongoing management of the ward area.
  • Participate in efficient and effective HR planning – management of employee conduct, duty rosters, annual leave, study leave, mandatory training sessions, sickness absence reporting and management of the appropriate use of Bank nursing complying with agreed policy and procedure.
  • Take charge of recruitment and selection of staff as required.
  • Ensure all ward nursing staff attend regular 1:1 meetings ensuring completion of regular KSF/PDP’s.
  • Ensures effective management of ward resources including stores, supplies and medicines.
  • Is aware of, observes and adheres to hospital, organisational and national policies.
  • Reports all accidents/incidents/complaints involving patients, carers and staff to the Lead nurse and commences enquiries or documentation as necessary.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job: Essential

  • Registered Nurses on the NMC Register with 5 years experience at band 5 within an ENT setting, band 6 experience is essential for this post
  • Recent and relevant acute surgical experience
  • Evidence of continued professional development
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent analytical and numerical skills
  • Good IT knowledge and skills
  • Advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of a range clinical procedures and practices
  • Knowledge of hospital policies/procedures and practices specific to the working environment
  • Effective time management skills
  • Ability to use initiative

From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full-time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part-time working hours will be reduced on a pro-rata basis.
