About the role

The Manager, Indigenous Student Support facilitates the development of institutional culture, space, systems and supports that foster access and success for Indigenous students. The Manager enlivens the Indigenous Education & Student Services planning framework by addressing its core elements in context that support Indigenous students and the growth of understanding of Indigenous Peoples and Knowledges throughout the university community. These core elements include:

  • Respecting the people of these lands
  • Committing to learning about the past and its impact on Indigenous peoples
  • Contributing to repairing the effects of oppression of Indigenous peoples
  • Promoting understanding of Indigenous ways of knowing and being
  • Applying Indigenous protocols to research with Indigenous peoples
  • Celebrating Indigenous cultures

The Manager provides direct service and oversees others who provide direct service for prospective and registered Indigenous students, advising, referring, and coordinating supports that reduce barriers to entry, support student retention, timely completion, and personal and academic success. The Manager also provides counsel to support faculty and Indigenous students in online and face-to-face learning environments, and where Indigenous topics are raised that impact all students. Working in collaboration with Student Services team members as appropriate, the Manager plays a critical role in supporting Indigenous students who require accommodations and when incidents and crises involve Indigenous students.

These responsibilities are rooted in a holistic perspective and supported by positive relationships built with local communities and Old Ones/Elders.

Job Requirements

  • Indigenous ancestry
  • Master’s degree in relevant discipline at minimum and minimum of five years’ experience in a post-secondary setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Proven experience working with a wide range of Indigenous Peoples and Nations, with first-hand knowledge of Indigenous cultures, practices, and issues
  • Ability to create strong working relationships in the University community and with local Nations
  • Demonstrated success with student service initiation and delivery in a post- secondary environment
  • Knowledge of cross-cultural issues and ability to facilitate Indigenous cultural training
  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills with experience in a diverse setting
  • Excellent counselling and conflict resolution skills, as well as a high level of diplomacy, tact, and judgment necessary when dealing with difficult situations
  • Fluency in online learning environments
  • Must be able to work flexible hours
  • Knowledge of the programs and strategic directions of Royal Roads University is an asset

Additional Information

This is a regular, full-time position working 37.5 hours per week. This position has been evaluated at MPT-C with a salary range of $76,430 (minimum) to $89,820 (midpoint) to $103,209 (maximum) per annum. Employment offers will normally be made between the minimum and midpoint of the range and are determined by knowledge, experience and internal equity.
