About the role

The Engineering Project Manager, Facilities & Capital Projects will work with cross functional, interdisciplinary teams in multiple technical/engineering projects, and be responsible for overall project management by adopting and applying project management tools, techniques, and best practices - This will include; developing and maintaining detailed project management plans considering commercial, technical, legal, and regulatory requirements; developing, maintaining and reporting schedule, budget and resources performance against plans; identifying risks and implementing risk mitigation strategies; as well as improving project management practices across the engineering department.

Key Responsibilities

  • Structures and manages detailed, end-to-end project plans, holding stakeholders accountable for progressing against established scope/timelines while providing timely and effective communication on project status, risks, issues, analyses/findings to Senior Leadership Team
  • Overall responsibility for driving the execution of projects within portfolio across all domains in order to meet the stated success criteria and project(s) value realization, with explicit consideration to business process, change impacts and the transition from planning to execution and eventually hand over to customer.
  • Anticipates risks, issues, trends and the potential impacts and timely resolution of impediments, while effectively managing the integrated schedule and ensuring continuing review and prioritization

Project Definition & Initiation

  • Leads the definition of business case, and project objectives, involving all relevant stakeholders and ensuring technical feasibility.
  • Facilitates the development of project specification (technical, functional, cost (expenditure authorization), time, scope) based on stakeholder requirements.
  • Collaborates with key stakeholders to define project requirements, scope, and baselines.
  • Ensures that the project objectives defined are aligned with the strategic goals of the organization.

Project Planning

  • Develops detailed project plans considering commercial, technical, legal, and regulatory requirements, and track progress as per Nordion’s project management process.
  • Manages changes to the project scope, schedule, and budget using defined change management processes.
  • Clearly communicate project goals and team member responsibilities; convene and manage project meetings as required by the project.
  • Owns, manages, and resolves resource availability and allocation.

Project Execution, Monitoring & Control

  • Measures and monitors project performance (scope, budget, schedule, and quality) using appropriate tools and techniques.
  • Ensures that all projects are delivered on-time, within scope and within budget.
  • Coordinates the activities of interdisciplinary members of the project team (strategic supply, procurement, commercial, operations, quality, etc.).
  • Monitors all work related to function, delivery, resources, and quality.
  • Identifies project risks, maintain risks and issues log, implement risk mitigation strategies, and reports/escalates issues to management as needed.
  • Creates and maintains comprehensive project documentation as well as manages project milestones per requirements of Nordion’s project management process.
  • Manages the relationship with all stakeholders (internal and external).
  • Communicates project status to key stakeholders and team members effectively; facilitates resolution of conflicts and disagreements.
  • Maintains action plans and report status on all projects on an ongoing basis, including identification and resolution of resource constraints and other issues.
  • Adheres to Nordion’s Environmental, Health & Safety Policies, Quality Management System, and any other organizational procedures.

Project Management Processes, Standards & Tools

  • Assists Manager, Project Services in project portfolio management, development and maintenance of standards, templates, project management and Nordion’s project development processes.
  • Provides continuous insight on process improvements or resources/ tools and opportunities.
  • Develops and contributes standards and templates to the project management toolkit.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary Engineering or other technical degree
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience managing and/or leading one or more complex technical projects, ideally with some experience in the nuclear sector
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) or similar, is required

Skills & Competencies

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead/manage complex capital engineering/facilities projects with wide breadth of cross-stakeholder impacts with deep understanding of project management tools, techniques and best practices.
  • Experience working and applying project management methodologies - traditional/waterfall, Agile and visual management.
  • Moderate to deep working knowledge of business principles, strategy deployment and contracts.
  • Strong working knowledge of MS products (Word, Excel, Power Point, Project), Recent and relevant working experience with management systems.
  • Exceptional communication skills (written and verbal), including ability to formulate concise and impactful methods of communication.
  • Superior organizational skills, including ability to employ systematic approach for identifying and tracking dependencies, ensuring proper resolution of outstanding items, and structuring efficient stakeholder meetings/discussions.
  • Demonstrates a high degree of persuasive power and is a team player with high intrinsic motivation. Uses empathy to understand needs of others and uses that knowledge to motivate them. Sets an example that others willingly follow.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills to actively listen and communicate in ways that foster trust and show flexibility. Easily adapt to varied roles on teams from follower to leader. Change approach or method to best fit the situation.
  • Demonstrated ability to consistently apply expert judgment with available information when proposing solutions/recommendations.
  • Ability to excel in a self-directed work environment and influence across the organization. Knows what communication is needed to succeed and ensures it takes place.
