Processing Clerk (Temporary)
Shortgrass Library System honours and acknowledges that we are situated on Treaty 7 and Treaty 4 territory, traditional lands of the Siksika, Kainai, Piikani, Stoney-Nakoda, and Tsuut’ina as well as the Cree, Sioux, and the Saulteaux bands of the Ojibwa peoples. Shortgrass Library System ( www.shortgrass.ca ) is looking for a part-time (21 to 28 hrs/wk), temporary Processing Clerk
. This temporary position is expected to last until at least December 24th, 2025, with a possibility of extension into 2026.
The successful candidate should have strong attention to detail, a commitment to providing excellent service to member libraries, and be able to work without close supervision. This position reports to the Manager of Systems & Technical Services
and is a vital part of our small, close-knit Technical Services team.
Responsibilities:
Material processing:
- Label, barcode, and process library materials accurately according to each destination library’s processing rules.
- Laminate book covers.
- Conduct minor book repairs (e.g. by taping spines).
- Run discs through the disc cleaner machine when libraries send these to headquarters for the scratches to be removed.
- Monitor processing supplies and ensure supplies are re-ordered as needed.
- Maintain weekly statistics of processed materials.
Shipping and receiving:
- Change status of processed items by scanning them into the system, and preparing them for shipping.
- Prepare shipments for delivery via van runs, courier services, or mail, packaging materials securely.
- Receive and inspect incoming shipments for accuracy and damage.
Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- High school graduate.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Knowledge of computers and basic keyboarding skills.
- Ability to work quickly and accurately, with attention to detail, while performing repetitive tasks.
- Ability to work independently and reliably without direct supervision.
- Physical abilities:
- Sufficient dexterity to operate equipment such as a laminator and disc cleaning machine (training provided).
- Able to perform frequent bending, twisting, kneeling and squatting.
- Able to perform frequent reaching over shoulder, waist level, and from the floor.
- Able to lift up to 50lbs.
- A commitment to upholding the Canadian Federation of Library Association’s statements on Intellectual Freedom and Diversity and Inclusion .
Desired Qualifications
- Experience laminating and/or using a disc cleaner machine.
- Experience using software such as MS Office or Google Workspace.
- Experience in a public library or public library system environment.
Salary and Benefits
$20/hr plus 6% vacation pay.
This is an in-office part-time position with no remote component, but some flexibility is available in defining working hours (subject to organizational needs, and within Shortgrass’ normal business hours, which are 8:15am-4:30pm Monday-Friday).
