Dr. Rachel Mitchell, as part of the Suicide Prevention Research Collaborative, is seeking a knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and motivated individual to join her team as a Research Assistant. The successful applicant will contribute to impactful research aimed at understanding and preventing suicide and self-harm among young people, with an emphasis on advancing knowledge of sex- and gender-specific risk and resilience, including the experiences of gender-diverse individuals, as well as the role of social media in shaping youth mental health.

The position involves working closely with Dr. Mitchell and her research team on projects that inform clinical practice, public policy, and national suicide prevention efforts in Canada.

This is a hybrid position, conducted both on-site at Sunnybrook’s Bayview campus and remotely on designated days. Preference will be given to candidates who can commit to approximately two years in the lab.

Responsibilities:

• Assist with a new study adapting and piloting a brief suicide intervention for youth, including recruitment and engagement with youth with lived experience of suicide and/or self-harm

• Support ongoing research projects across methodologies (e.g., clinical trials, health administrative data studies)

• Meet regularly with study leads to track progress, maintain timelines, and troubleshoot challenges

• Contribute to the development of new research projects, including grant writing

• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams at Sunnybrook and partner institutions, including individuals with lived experience, to support study design and implementation

• Contribute to the work of the Suicide Prevention Research Collaborative, including supporting new studies and promoting research outputs

• Support qualitative and quantitative research including data collection, entry, cleaning, organization, and analysis in accordance with study protocols

• Assist with knowledge translation, including interpreting results and writing/preparing scientific reports, abstracts, manuscripts, presentations, and other dissemination materials

• Prepare and submit Research Ethics Board applications and amendments; ensure ongoing regulatory compliance

• Support administrative tasks (e.g., expense tracking, grant reporting, onboarding of research staff/students)

• Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in health sciences-, psychology-, or related field (or equivalent)
• 1–2 years of clinical research experience and/or experience in psychology or psychiatry-related research
• Experience working with youth with lived experience of suicide/self-harm is an asset
• Training in TCPS/GCP guidelines
• Knowledge of biostatistics, epidemiology, research methods, and grant/manuscript writing
• Experience in both quantitative and qualitative research methods is preferred
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.), SPSS, and NVivo
• Experience with database design and maintenance (e.g., REDCap) is an asset
• Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
• Strong attention to detail, time management skills, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment
