Position Summary

This is a faculty position reporting to the Dean, School of Health Sciences (SHS) and works in collaboration with the Manager of Simulation and Experiential Learning. This position is responsible for assessing, developing, implementing and evaluating innovative and current experiential learning pedagogy with an emphasis on simulated practice education and works closely with SHS faculty, staff, and students in advancing simulation and experiential learning best practices throughout SHS by aligning with the Health Simulation Centre’s strategic priorities.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Designs, and delivers simulation-based learning experiences and ensures alignment with laboratory and clinical curricular outcomes.

  • Leads and designs faculty onboarding and professional development sessions in health simulation, integrating INACSL and SSH standards with best practices in instruction, accreditation, patient safety, and quality improvement. Provides mentorship to support novice and developing faculty.

  • Liaises with faculty from SHS and other subject-matter experts to ensure laboratory, simulation, and clinical learning activities reflect current and relevant content and practice and promote a psychological safe learning environment, are culturally relevant and effectively meet curricular outcomes.

  • Collaborates with the Simulation Technologist in simulation experience, design, and implementation that reflects best practice standards.

  • Collaborates with the SHS Practice Education Coordinator in the development of Interprofessional Education (IPE) simulation experiences.

  • Provides subject matter expertise when collaborating with faculty to integrate simulation pedagogy into the curricula.

  • Works collaboratively with the Manager of Simulation and Experiential Learning to develop policies, procedures, and protocols that support the simulation learning environment.

  • Oversees the collection and analysis of user evaluation data on simulation-based learning (SBL) learning outcomes and recommends improvements based on best practices in simulation and experiential learning.

  • Participates in research/scholarships to support innovation in health simulation and seeks opportunities to present at conferences, assist with research/scholarship opportunities, and engages with professional associations including the regulatory bodies to contribute to the health simulation body of knowledge.

  • Supports with special projects as identified by the Dean of Health Sciences and the Manager of Simulation and Experiential related to simulation, experiential learning, student experience and quality improvement.

Area Hiring Criteria

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing.
  • Current and active registration with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM)
  • Minimum three (3) recent relevant experience in simulation, clinical scenario and curriculum development or an equivalent combination of training and experience with recent teaching in a post secondary environment.
  • Provincial Instructor Diploma or equivalent in adult education (completed or in progress).
  • Master’s degree in nursing or a related field (e.g., Simulation, Education, or Health Sciences) preferred.
  • Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) and/or certification in International Nursing Association of Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of adult learning principles and simulation-related theory and practices.
  • Considerable knowledge of educational technologies is an asset.

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated work experience in teaching and/or mentoring adult learners.

  • Good understanding of health care practice environments with nurses and allied health professionals’ practice.

  • Excellent communications skills, both written and oral.

  • Demonstrated ability to be self-directed, take initiative and work independently and as a team member/leader utilizing principles of equity and inclusivity to contribute to a common goal of excellence in health education.

Salary Range - Prorated based on FTE

$70.44 - $112.87/hour. Staring salary will be determined by education, experience and placement criteria as outlined in the VCCFA Collective Agreement.
