The opportunity
The Senior Manager is responsible for managing the operations of OTPP’s Private investments. This role is responsible for the oversight of all aspects of private operations including trade and asset servicing, performance capture, investment accounting, fee oversight & reporting. The Senior Manager is also responsible for managing relationships with Investments, other internal stakeholders, and several key service providers.
Who you'll work with
You will work in a sub-team within the larger Private Investment Operations team within Finance. You will work closely with all investment departments that execute private deals. You will also collaborate with other stakeholders in Finance, legal, Tax and Risk to enable deal Execution. You will also work closely with Technology product owners, technology teams and and third-party providers
What you'll do
Deal Execution and Support
- You will act as the primary liaison for investments and other functional teams for private deal execution-related requirements, demonstrating strong collaboration, strategic solutioning and communication skills
- The position provides leadership in the deal execution process and acts as a primary point of contact for all issue resolutions. You will lead projects and meetings in relation to incident management ensuring effective resolution
- Approximately one-third to a half of your time will be spent executing private deals for all investment groups
This includes:
- Serve as the primary point of contact for investments and private deal execution-related requirements
- Ensure appropriate sign-offs and operational setups are in place.
- Review and understand all relevant transaction execution related documents to determine and recommend structuring, funding process, accounting treatment and servicing of the new investment. Act as the subject matter expert for the complete deal execution lifecycle for all internal and external purposes
- Continue to enhance and further develop existing processes by collaborating with other stakeholders and IT resources for quick implementation of tactical solutions to enhance the deal execution experience
Deal Advisory & Structuring Influence
- Partner closely with Legal and Tax functions to act as a trusted advisor in structuring discussions, leveraging deep process knowledge to guide teams toward solutions that optimize for both deal-specific requirements and firm-wide consistency
- Champion the adoption of standardized frameworks for structuring, entity onboarding, and reporting protocols, positioning recommendations through the lens of risk mitigation, operational efficiency, and scalability
- Balance the needs of the deal teams, Finance function, and broader firm when providing strategic recommendations
Stakeholder Management
- Set examples for the team carefully managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders
- Acts as a catalyst for transformation, collaboration, new capability development and information sharing across the Finance Division \
- Act as a primary point of contact for resolution of third-party issues. This includes design, implementation, and monitoring of KPIs and work with application support teams (both internal and external) to ensure issues are resolved and technologies are optimized to drive speed and agility related to third party investment management activities.
Data Management and Reporting
- Ensure highest quality is maintained for deal execution related data and metrics for enterprise-wide use
- Create actionable insights through analytics and recommend actions based on these insights
- Perform monitoring of dashboards and deliver timely, accurate reports and provide recommendations to ensure processes are continuously efficient and provide consumer value
Operational oversight
- Provide direction to the team and review their work to meet deadlines and quality standards
- Serve as a thought leader and conduct business analysis to achieve quick resolution of complex strategic, process and technological related issues
- Provide oversight on day-to-day processes and technology changes to ensure the quality and reliability of processes, data and analytics provided to the internal users
Leadership and People Development
- Mentor and develop talent within the Deal Management team, fostering analytical rigor, collaborative mindset, and professional growth
- Model a culture of professional excellence, inclusion, and continuous improvement
- Support onboarding and training initiatives, driving knowledge retention and consistency across the team
- Act as a senior leader within Private Investment Operations, contributing strategic perspective and influencing the direction of the department.
- Be available to support other teams in the division when required
Management accountability
- This role has Senior Associates as direct reports.
- The role will include reporting to senior Finance and Investment leadership, involving the communication of key issues related to core functions, risk matters, and items requiring attention from various internal and external partners within the organization.
- As subject matter experts, the role will be relied upon to inform management and advise on solutions.
Decision making
- The role requires strategic decision making and ability to incorporate “real world” practical considerations into analysis and recommendations. Furthermore, the role involves administering and tracking many moving pieces and therefore requires advanced organizational skills and a high level of job ownership. Initiative on the part of the candidate will be highly valued, as the Group is ever evolving and open to improvements.
- Additionally, this role involves analysing policies and procedures established by senior management and making judgments in complex situations that are principles-based.
- In addition, the role will often require tact, diplomacy, and persuasiveness especially when dealing with our internal and external stakeholders. Care and attention must be placed in the communication and style of communication in order to achieve best results.
What you'll need
- CFA/CPA/CAIA all considered an asset
- Relevant university degree (such as Business, Economics, Mathematics, Computer Science) or equivalent relevant experience.
- Extensive experience in investment finance processes especially as related to private alternative assets
- Excellent analytical skills and the ability to think through problems and recommend solutions.
- Strong quantitative and computer skills (Excel, Data Visualization tools), including an understanding of database concepts.
- Strong project management and time management skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- 10+ years of related work experience in alternative investment operations.
- Experience with data analysis and reporting.
- Understanding of various private investment structures and deal mechanics.
- Is comfortable working with Technology to enhance systems and processes
- Ability to quickly grasp new concepts and work under pressure with time-sensitive deadlines.
