Senior Accountant
Position Title: Senior Accountant

Salary Range: $32.00 – $38.50 per hour

POSITION SUMMARY
The Senior Accountant will play a key role in ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial information for the organization. Reporting directly to the Accounting Manager/Comptroller, the incumbent will be responsible for preparing monthly and annual financial reports, reconciling accounts, supporting the annual audit process, and leading continuous improvements in accounting operations. The Senior Accountant will provide support in areas such as financial analysis, budgeting, and reporting, and will work collaboratively with other departments to ensure financial compliance and best practices.
This position is ideally suited to an experienced accounting professional who is comfortable working in a complex environment, preferably with experience in not-for-profit or First Nation financial operations. The role requires a hands-on approach to financial operations and the ability to think strategically to support long-term organizational goals.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial Reporting & Month-End Processes
- Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Perform month-end and year-end close activities, including journal entries, accruals, and adjusting entries.
- Analyze and reconcile general ledger accounts on a regular basis to ensure accuracy and completeness.
Audit and Compliance
- Assist in the preparation of audit working papers and serve as a primary contact for external auditors.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable financial policies, regulations, and reporting standards.
- Support continuous improvement of internal controls and financial processes.
ERP & Systems Management
- Utilize and maintain accounting systems, with a strong preference for Adagio, Xyntax, or other ERP systems common in First Nation or not-for-profit environments.
- Participate in system upgrades, new implementations, and data migrations.
- Troubleshoot and resolve ERP-related issues in collaboration with IT and finance colleagues.
Budgeting and Forecasting
- Assist in the preparation and consolidation of annual budgets and quarterly forecasts.
- Provide variance analysis and support departments in understanding their financial performance.
- Support strategic planning efforts through financial modeling and scenario analysis.
Team Support and Mentorship
- Support and provide training to junior accounting staff as needed.
- Promote a culture of accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement within the Finance Department.
Other Duties
- Provide ad hoc financial analysis and reporting as required.
- Participate in cross-functional projects and initiatives.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Comptroller or Executive Team.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required.
- Enrollment in or completion of a professional accounting designation such as CPA, CGA, CAFM, ACCA, CA, or CMA is required.
Experience:
- Minimum of 5–7 years of progressive experience in accounting and financial management.
- Experience working within a not-for-profit or First Nation organization is highly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience with financial statement preparation, audit support, and full-cycle accounting.
- Prior experience with ERP implementation and data migration is a strong asset.
Technical Skills:
- Advanced proficiency with financial ERP systems. Experience with Adagio, Xyntax, or other systems used in First Nation financial operations is preferred.
- High level of proficiency with Microsoft Excel; knowledge of Power BI or similar data visualization tools is an asset.
- Solid understanding of Canadian GAAP, PSAS, and other applicable financial standards.
