About the role

Job Description

The Manager, Workplace Investigations plays a critical role in fostering a safe, respectful, and inclusive workplace across our long-term care and home care operations. This role leads the organization’s workplace investigations program, ensuring that all concerns related to employee conduct, harassment, discrimination, and workplace safety are addressed promptly, thoroughly, and in alignment with healthcare regulations and organizational values. The management of Extendicare’s Whistleblower program represents a core function within the work of the Manager, Workplace Investigations.

Reporting to the Senior Director, Quality and Risk, the Manager, Workplace Investigations will work collaboratively with various functions within Extendicare including Human Resources, Risk and Compliance, and Legal.

This role is based at our head office in Markham Ontario. Extendicare offers a hybrid working environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and continuously improve, a robust workplace investigations framework tailored to the homecare, long-term care and retirement home operating environment.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable legislation across the provinces in which Extendicare operates (e.g., Occupational Health and Safety Acts, Human Rights Codes, Long-Term Care Homes Acts, etc).
  • Establish and maintain investigation protocols, documentation standards, and reporting mechanisms.
  • Assign, monitor and support, investigations led by HR investigators within the HR organization.
  • Conduct complex, sensitive investigations involving staff, contractors, and volunteers across long-term care homes and home care services.
  • Ensure investigations are aligned with healthcare best practices.
  • Collaborate with HR, Legal, and Operations to determine appropriate outcomes and follow-up actions.
  • Provide training and guidance to managers, HR staff, and frontline leaders on investigation procedures and respectful workplace practices.
  • Promote awareness of reporting mechanisms and support resources for staff.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to senior leadership on workplace conduct, risk mitigation, and culture improvement.
  • Liaise with external bodies (e.g., professional regulatory colleges) as needed during investigations.
  • Maintain accurate records of investigations and outcomes in accordance with privacy and healthcare standards.
  • Analyze trends and develop proactive strategies to reduce workplace incidents.
  • Prepare regular reports for executive leadership and contribute to quality improvement initiatives.
  • Prepare quarterly Board reports.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Law, Health Administration, or related field (Master’s or JD preferred).
  • Minimum 5–7 years of experience in workplace investigations, employee relations, or compliance, preferably in healthcare or regulated environments.
  • Strong understanding of healthcare legislation, privacy laws, and employment standards in Ontario.
  • Exceptional communication, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage sensitive issues with discretion, empathy, and professionalism.
  • Experience working in unionized environments is an asset.
  • Certified Workplace Investigator (AWI or equivalent) preferred
  • HR or Compliance certifications (e.g., CHRP, SHRM, CPHR, CCEP) preferred
