The Saskatchewan Pension Plan (SPP) was created under The Saskatchewan Pension Plan Act in 1986 and is a fully funded, capital accumulation plan created by the provincial government to provide professionally managed pension options at low fees to individuals with little or no access to employer-sponsored pensions. The Plan has over $850 million in assets under management and over 32,000 members.
The Opportunity
SPP is seeking a well-organized, client-focused, and efficient individual to join its growing pension team in Kindersley as a Senior Retirement Officer.
Reporting to the Manager of Pension Services, this role oversees retirement services for SPP members, ensuring retirement options, transfers, and payments are processed accurately and in compliance with regulations and organizational policies. This position plays a key role in guiding members through complex retirement decisions while leading financial reconciliations, quality assurance, regulatory compliance, member communications, and system enhancements.
As a Senior Retirement Officer, you will:
- Oversee retirement-related financial transactions, including RRSP transfers, annuity and VB payments, ensuring accuracy, compliance with CRA regulations, and adherence to SPP legislation and ethical standards.
- Provide expert guidance and counselling to members on complex retirement issues, resolve escalated inquiries, and lead the development of integrated, brand-aligned education and communication materials across various platforms.
- Supervise and train staff across pension services, member service, and finance departments, fostering a collaborative environment and ensuring consistent service delivery.
- Coordinate payment approvals, manage post-retirement accounts, and lead the development, testing, and implementation of retirement policies and system enhancements to support operational efficiency and compliance.
- Supervise and train staff involved in pension operations, including performance monitoring.
The Ideal Candidate
You will have demonstrated ability and knowledge of:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills to explain financial results and policies.
- Ability to educate members on complex pension and financial products.
- Financial leadership and teamwork skills.
- Experience developing and implementing internal control procedures.
- Strong organizational skills to manage high volumes of tasks under pressure.
- Proficiency in word processing, databases, and spreadsheets.
- Pension terminology and administration practices.
- Financial products including RRSPs, LIRAs, annuities, and VB options.
- Retirement and estate planning market trends.
- Tax regulations, spousal attribution rules, and post-retirement options.
- Relevant computer applications and pension legislation.
Qualifications
Typically, the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position are acquired through an Administration or Commerce Degree, together with a CFP designation and CIFC or CIFOC. This would be supplemented by completion of the Pension Plan Administration Certificate (PPAC) or the Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS) designation and related experience in pensions and/or the financial industry, together with several years of relevant experience. The successful candidate must pass the Canadian Investment Funds Course within the first six months of employment.
