About the role

Your Opportunity

An opportunity exists in our Markham, Mississauga or Toronto offices for a Senior Water Resources Engineer / Water Resources Project Manager. As the successful candidate, you will be responsible for the management and coordination of stormwater management designs for projects ranging from commercial or residential infill developments to master stormwater drainage plans such Subwatershed Impact Studies with, as well as providing support in pursuing business development activities. You will be the prime contact on your projects with the client, approval agencies and others and you will use your technical and leadership abilities to lead a project team of designers and others.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Guide the stormwater management design for projects through to completion, whether it is due diligence/feasibility work, preliminary/conceptual design, detailed design, scheduling, tendering or construction;

  • Coordination with engineers, technical staff and/or team members in various disciplines to ensure that the projects’ needs are met in a timely and effective manner;

  • Serving as a technical expert during liaison with clients, municipal/agency staff, and other stakeholders;

  • Complete engineering design of stormwater management systems including ponds, underground and surface drainage infrastructure, low impact development features, linear infrastructure stormwater management and conveyance systems, and erosion and sediment control plans. Includes technical review and sealing of complex engineering design drawings, where applicable;

  • Prepare and review technical reports and design briefs to document analyses including taking responsibility for the quality of written, technical and graphic work. Includes technical and communication review and sealing of complex engineering design drawings and reports, where applicable;

  • Collaborate with, and provide advice and guidance to Stantec planners, landscape architects, environmental specialists, civil designers, project managers, as well as external consultants, by participating directly in the completion of more complex projects;

  • Liaise with clients, agencies and others to determine project requirements and obtain approvals. Take responsibility for the interpretation of requirements on complex projects such as Subwatershed Impact Studies, Environmental Assessments, linear infrastructure and/or large development projects;

  • Writing/reviewing reports and design briefs to document analyses;

  • Taking responsibility for the quality of written, technical and graphic/drawing work in a senior review (QA/QC) role;

  • Ensuring that the clients’ needs are met in a timely and cost effective manner;

  • Undertaking business development and promotional activities with new and existing clients in the pursuit of new projects, and the cross-selling of other practice areas, including client outreach and preparing work programs, proposals and fee estimates;

  • Managing surface water related projects and/or tasks, ensuring completion of work on-time and on-budget;

  • Lead and/or contribute to project proposals and budgets; and

  • This position includes exposure to a variety of projects and sectors, so experience with different sectors and clients would be considered an asset. Career growth opportunities stemming from the position include the potential for a leadership role locally and/or corporately.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate ideas to others both verbally and in written documentation such as emails, memos and technical reports with the ability to coordinate with clients and review agencies;

  • Extensive knowledge of Ontario’s stormwater guidelines and regulations and familiarity with the land development/redevelopment process with an understanding of water resources, environmental and/or civil engineering concepts. Strong working knowledge with residential subdivisions is considered an asset;

  • A background in the preparation of stormwater management plans and reports, master and/or phased master drainage plans and functional servicing plans and/or significant experience on the design of water resources infrastructure in support of linear infrastructure projects;

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate ideas to others both verbally and in written documentation such as emails, memos and technical reports;

  • Capability of overseeing projects from design to completion;

  • Business development, strong leadership, time management, communication and team building skills are essential for you to meet the expectations of this challenging position;

  • Self-motivated individual possessing strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, and are able to prioritize multiple tasks;

  • Ability to work independently and demonstrated ability to manage projects and clients is essential; and

  • Hands on experience with stormwater management modelling, ideally Visual OTTHYMO, HEC-RAS, and PCSWMM. Knowledge of SWMHYMO, InfoWorks, GAWSER, or other models considered an asset. Experience with software such as ArcGIS, AutoCAD (Civil3D) is preferred. Requires proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.).

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Civil Engineering (or similar) and registered as a Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).

  • Minimum of 12 years of stormwater management engineering experience with a preference for 15+ years with land development engineering and/or linear infrastructure design experience.

  • Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
