The School of Construction and Building Sciences is hiring a full-time Sheet Metal Technician (Educational Laboratory Technologist II), focused on the Sheet Metal trade. As a member of the Mechanical Technician Team, this role provides dedicated support to the Sheet Metal programs, while also supporting the needs of the tech team at Patricia Campus. It is a key role in maintaining equipment, managing supplies, and preparing lab/shop environments for effective hands-on learning. Key duties include preparing lab exercises, calibrating and repairing equipment, setting up instructional materials, and demonstrating safe equipment use. The role also supports student safety and enhances the lab learning experience. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of the technologies, procedures, tooling, and instrumentation used in the sheet metal worker trade, along with a strong commitment to safety.

Key Responsibilities

Lab/Shop Operations Maintain, calibrate, and repair lab/shop equipment Ensure lab/shop environments are safe, secure, and organized Manufacture specialized items as needed to support instruction Maintain accurate maintenance and inspection records Collaborate with other programs or departments as required Inventory Management Monitor and maintain inventory of equipment, tools, and consumables Catalogue equipment manuals and technical documentation Instructional Support Prepare, set up, and dismantle lab/shop exercises Assist with or conduct equipment demonstrations under instructor supervision Maintain working knowledge of equipment use and applications Support instructional staff in ensuring safe and effective use of equipment during lab/shop activities Student Support Demonstrate proper equipment use and safety practices Ensure students are working safely and effectively in lab/shop environments Skills & Abilities: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills Proficient in basic computer applications and digital tools Skilled in operating a wide range of manual, electronic, hydraulic, and pneumatic tools and equipment Demonstrated ability to use tools and equipment safely and effectively Capable of identifying required materials and estimating project costs Physically able to perform job duties, including lifting up to 50 lbs unassisted Flexible and adaptable to varying work hours and assignments, including occasional evening and weekend work Qualifications: Completion of grade twelve Completion of Journeyperson Certificate or Technical Diploma required. Equivalencies may be considered Direct experience working in the sheet metal trade is required.

Experience working in a lab/shop setting is an asset

Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license Valid Forklift Operator’s license would be an asset Knowledge of related occupational hazards and safety precautions Proven Metal Fabrication and/or welding experience is an asset Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services (WES), International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) or the Comparative Education Services (CES).

Classification - Educational Laboratory Technologist II

This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement. Remuneration Refer to salary range noted on this posting, plus a comprehensive benefits package.

The compensation range for this job posting is : $55,880.75 - $75,498.71
