Position Summary

The successful candidate will prepare, assemble, install, test, troubleshoot and repair electrical wiring, fixtures, control devices and related equipment in Division schools and buildings

Job Duties/Responsibilities

  • installing and repairing lighting fixtures and equipment, including switches and circuit breakers

  • maintaining and installing distribution and control equipment such as switches, relays, circuit breaker panels and fuse enclosures

  • connecting power to communications equipment, signaling devices and heating and cooling systems

  • troubleshooting electronic systems and replacing faulty components

  • conducting preventive maintenance programs

  • reading and interpreting drawings and blueprints

  • installing, replacing, maintaining and repairing electrical systems and related electrical equipment

  • installing EMT raceway and data cabling

  • installing and maintaining fire alarm systems and fibre optic systems

  • installing, replacing, maintaining and repairing renewable power sources, such as wind and solar, and related equipment trouble shooting, installing, repairing fire alarms, motors and VFDs.

Education/Qualifications

  • valid Alberta Journeyperson Electrician certificate or Red Seal Electrician certificate
  • valid Alberta driver's license
  • experience working in a school or institutional environment

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • must have the ability to: lift up to 25kg; climb ladders, work at heights, and on scaffolds; stand for extended periods; perform work in awkward and noisy places; undertake overhead work

  • must be able to distinguish colors to work with color-coded wiring

  • must be able to undertake tasks requiring good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity

  • good problem solving, organizational, time management, and record keeping skills

  • excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • computer literacy

  • ability to work independently or with a partner

  • experience working with fire alarms and motors experience with VFDs considered an asset

Rate of Pay

$44.41 per hour with an advance on expenses of $450.69 bi-weekly as per Collective Agreement

Closing

Hours: 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.; shift work may be required.

  • must be prepared to use personal vehicle to travel to Division schools and buildings
  • must posses a valid Alberta driver’s license
  • must provide all trade related hand tools must satisfactorily complete required occupational health and safety courses supplied by the Division (First Aid, WHMIS, Confined Spaces, Asbestos training)
