The Opportunity

We are currently hiring a dependable and safety-focused Heavy Equipment Operator to work in our scrap yard located at our head office in Olds, Alberta. This is a full-time role with a Monday to Friday schedule. The ideal candidate will have experience operating equipment such as material handlers, loaders, excavators with grapples or magnets, and forklifts. You’ll play a key role in the processing, loading, and handling of scrap metal and other recyclable materials.

How You’ll Spend Your Time

  • Operating heavy equipment (e.g., excavators, loaders, material handlers) to move, load, and process scrap materials.
  • Sorting and organizing different types of ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
  • Assisting with loading/unloading trucks and containers.
  • Performing routine inspections and basic maintenance of equipment.
  • Supporting the yard team with general labor tasks when not operating machinery.
  • Ensuring compliance with all safety and environmental regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy equipment safely and efficiently in a fast-paced scrap yard environment.
  • Inspect equipment daily and report maintenance needs or malfunctions.
  • Load materials into trucks as required.
  • Monitor incoming loads for prohibited materials or contamination.
  • Work closely with scale operators and truck drivers to coordinate material handling.
  • Providing excellent customer service and communicating with customers.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area at all times.
  • Follow instructions from supervisors and adapt to changing job priorities.
  • Adhere to health, safety, and environmental guidelines at all times.
  • Work in loud, dusty, or dirty environments as needed.

Qualifications & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience operating heavy equipment (e.g., excavators, front-end loaders, skid steers, or forklifts) in an industrial, construction, or scrap/recycling environment.
  • Valid heavy equipment operator certification.
  • Prior experience in a scrap yard, recycling center, or industrial setting considered an asset.
  • Strong understanding of safety procedures and equipment operation best practices.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and in a physically demanding environment.
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to perform basic equipment maintenance.
  • Team-oriented, dependable, and self-motivated.
  • Excellent communicator who works best in a team environment and enjoys customer service.
  • Reliable and punctual with a strong work ethic.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods.
  • Physical fitness is required with the ability to lift 50lbs or more, climb ladders, walk long distances, frequent bending and picking up objects off the ground etc.
