Vision and Hearing Screener

Job Summary: The Vision and Hearing program is supported by RETSD, Manitoba Education, and the Winnipeg Regional
Health Authority. Under the direction of the Manager of Community Initiatives, the Vision and Hearing Screener is responsible for working with schools to screen students’ vision and hearing every fall. Vision Screening is throughout the
Division for grades Kindergarten, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11. Hearing Screening is for grades Kindergarten and grade 1. The screening is designed to detect signs of possible vision and hearing difficulties which may impact learning and school progress. The vision and hearing screening provides information on students who may require further testing from an
Audiologist and/or Optometrist.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Screener obtains schools list of students who require screening
- Use vision Instaline and Biopter equipment
- Documents results of screening
- Performs Hearing screening using audiometer
- Documents are provided to data entry staff for processing
- Attend required training on equipment use for screening
- Works as a team member with other screening staff
- Able to travel to various schools in RETSD
Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities:
Qualifications
- A grade 12 education and two years of relevant work experience or a combination of relevant education and experience
- External applicants, upon hire, must supply a Criminal Record search and a cleared Child Abuse Registry Check
- Driver’s license required and access to a reliable vehicle
Skills and abilities
- Demonstrate ability to establish positive relationships with children/youth
- Works as a team member with other screening staff
- Strong judgement and problem-solving skills with the ability to handle difficult and/or sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy
- Ability to be flexible to meet the varying social, emotional, and behavioural needs of students
- Ability to operate standard school and office equipment including personal computer applications and remains current with changing technology, practices, and equipment
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
Physical demands:
- Able to lift up to 20 pounds for equipment cart
- Requirement to stand, bend and crouch
- Ability to drive a vehicle
- Ability to stay seated for long periods
Working conditions:
- Some exposure to fluctuating outdoor temperatures and weather conditions while travelling to various schools in RETSD
