Department/Unit/Program Description

The Mental Health Inpatient Unit is a Schedule 1 adult psychiatry short-term unit that provides assessment, stabilization and short-term treatment. The secured inpatient unit also features a dining room, group work areas and a private terrace for patients. A multidisciplinary team staffs the Unit, providing nursing care as well as treatment and activity programs.

Position Summary

The Mental Health Inpatient Unit is currently seeking a Permanent Part Time Registered Practical Nurse to join their team.

Essential Qualifications

Current RPN registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario Three (3) years current nursing experience in psychiatric environment working with seriously mentally ill individuals in an inpatient or outpatient setting including medication administration Where RPN College certification diploma program did not include Advanced Physical Assessment and Medication Administration, applicant must provide evidence of additional education/certification equivalent to current diploma requirements or three (3) years current nursing experience in a psychiatric environment working with seriously mentally ill individuals in an inpatient or outpatient setting including medication administration Certificate/Diploma in Mental Health Nursing Non Violent Crisis Intervention Certificate or CPI training or completed within six months of hire Current BCLS, on hire Excellent and comprehensive biopsychosocial assessment skills Demonstrated knowledge of psychopharmacologic treatment and protocols Skilled at verbal and non-verbal de-escalation techniques Experience in health teaching Basic computer skills Excellent listening, communication, interpersonal and team building skills Demonstrated ability to deal effectively and cooperatively with all levels of staff, patients and the public Demonstrated problem solving, communication, team work and critical thinking skills Demonstrated organizational and time management skills Demonstrated skill in safe/correct techniques for transferring and positioning patients Demonstrated ability to work in a fast paced environment with continually changing priorities Ability to maximize utilization of resources Demonstrated good attendance with the ability to maintain this standard Ability to work within the Multidisciplinary Team Must be able to fulfill physical requirements of the job, as per current Physical Demands Analysis

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in Crisis Intervention techniques RAI Knowledge of community resources and referral protocols for consumers and family members Current knowledge of IPAC Standards Trained in EPIC - training can be provided, but must pass required testing.

Hours of Work

Available to work twelve (12) hour shifts, days and nights, Monday to Sunday. Shifts and hours may change according to departmental requirements and as per the CUPE Collective Agreement.
