ELIGIBILITY FOR THIS COMPETITION IS RESTRICTED TO STEP 1 CANDIDATES INCLUDING OPS ALOC AND OCAA LAWYERS living or working within 125 km of this location. Note: Eligible lawyers from outside the Area of Search may apply but will not be entitled to relocation or travel expenses for the transfer as set out below.

Step 1: All regular/fixed-term OCAA and ALOC lawyers on staff, current Redeployment List Members and current Articling Student Hireback Pool Members.
Step 2: In the absence of qualified applicants at Step 1 the competition may be reposted so that external applicants or non-members of the above-mentioned groups would then be eligible to apply.

The Legal Services Branch for the Ministry of Education (EDU) and the Ministry of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security (MCURES) seeks an experienced counsel to join its busy team to provide strategic legal advice on a variety of files related to education law, administrative law, labour law, Aboriginal law including duty to consult, human rights and privacy law; regulatory enforcement; litigation supervision and support; and corporate/commercial matters.

About the job

Duties will include:

  • Providing oral and written legal opinions and advising on statutes and regulations.
  • Supporting client policy and program development and operational work.
  • Advising on regulatory oversight and enforcement matters.
  • Developing statutes and regulations.
  • Providing litigation supervision and support respecting court and tribunal hearings.
  • Advising on corporate/commercial matters.

What you bring to the team

Mandatory requirements

  • Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario

Technical Legal Experience

  • Knowledge of EDU and MCURES statutes, regulations, and key legal issues relevant to the two ministries.
  • Experience in providing quality, strategic legal advice in a busy, fast-paced legal environment.
  • Ability to brief senior officials on legal issues and risks.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting policy development, legislative initiatives, litigation, regulatory oversight, and corporate/commercial matters.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Ability to handle their own files and thrive in a fast-paced work environment managing urgent deliverables on high-profile issues.
  • Commitment to team building, collaborative practice and diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
  • Ability to recognize and assess legal implications of Ministry practices and programs and provide strategic, risk-based advice.
  • Excellent client service and interpersonal skills.
  • Sound judgment and integrity.
  • Excellent analytical skills and oral and written communication skills.
