Cook – Carlton House (Part-Time)

The Role and Opportunity

The Canadian Mental Health Association Toronto Branch is looking for a Part-Time Cook for Carlton House. Carlton House is a 24/7 residential Transitional Housing Program with embedded Mental Health and Addictions Supports for 25 male- and female-identifying adult Refugees. In this role, the Cook will be responsible for preparing dinner for all residents within the program.

Hourly Range: $26.59 – $30.04 + 4% in lieu of vacation

Work Location: 213 Carlton St., Toronto, ON, M5A 2K9

Work Hours: 3 hours a day, 5 days a week, (Monday – Friday)

Responsibilities

  • Prepare a complete, balanced evening meal for dinner for 25 adults
  • Meals can be prepared with meats, seafood, poultry, vegetables and/or other food items using kitchen equipment and appliances
  • Must be familiar with preparing dishes meeting various special dietary needs, e.g.: nut, dairy, shellfish or gluten free
  • Able to cook with or without recipes, using the ingredients available
  • Dish and hand out the plates of food to clients
  • Collect and rinse dishes, stack and run dishwasher
  • Clean kitchen and maintain sanitary workstations, small and large kitchen appliances and equipment
  • Track inventory of groceries and cleaning supplies and generate lists for shopping

Experience & Education Required

  • Required certifications: Ontario Food Safety and Food Handler certifications
  • Understanding and training in Infection Prevention and Control standards and Health and Safety procedures in congregate living environments
  • Understanding of the Canada Food Guide for balanced nutritious meals
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience with food preparation and cooking
  • Sensitivity towards individuals with mental health challenges or substance abuse
  • Cultural competency training in BIPOC and 2SLGBTQ+ populations
  • Able to reach, bend, stoop and frequently lift up to 50 pounds
  • Effectively work in a team environment as well as independently
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience working in not-for-profit sector preferable with a strong interest in health care or related field an asset
  • Familiarity with preparing traditional dishes from Ethiopia, Uganda, Nigeria, Kenya and middle eastern countries an asset
  • Culinary training an asset

The candidate will bring experience working with diverse and vulnerable populations and the ability to demonstrate non-homophobic, anti-oppression and anti-racism approaches.
