T. Smith Engineering Inc. is a multidisciplinary engineering and consulting firm specializing in forensic engineering, building science, environmental services, laboratory analysis, and technical investigations. We support insurers, legal professionals, property owners, developers, contractors, and other organizations across Ontario. As our Environmental Services Department continues to grow, we are seeking an experienced environmental professional who can provide technical leadership, manage complex projects, strengthen client relationships, mentor staff, and help expand our environmental service offerings.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Environmental Lead to join our growing Environmental Services team. This is a senior technical, project leadership, and client-facing position for an accomplished environmental professional who is ready to lead complex environmental assessment, remediation, occupational hygiene, and due diligence projects. The successful candidate will also help shape the continued growth and strategic direction of the department. The ideal candidate combines strong technical expertise with proven project management, client relationship, mentorship, and business development capabilities. An experienced Industrial Hygienist with a strong background in designated substances, indoor air quality, occupational exposure assessments, hazardous materials, and environmental consulting would be an excellent fit for this opportunity.

What You’ll Do

Provide technical and operational leadership within the Environmental Services Department. Lead complex environmental assessment, remediation, occupational hygiene, and due diligence projects from initial scope through completion. Manage and oversee Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments for real estate and transactional due diligence. Conduct and oversee Phase I and Phase II ESAs supporting Records of Site Condition under Ontario Regulation 153/04. Oversee soil, groundwater, soil vapour, mould, hazardous materials, and indoor air quality investigations. Lead Designated Substance Surveys and other occupational hygiene assessments in accordance with O. Reg. 490/09 and other applicable requirements. Develop sampling strategies, interpret laboratory and field results, assess potential exposure risks, and provide practical recommendations. Support remediation planning, risk management, environmental monitoring, and project closure. Prepare and review technical reports, proposals, budgets, work plans, regulatory submissions, and client correspondence. Provide strategic guidance to clients regarding environmental planning, permitting, regulatory approvals, infrastructure servicing, and project feasibility. Manage project scope, schedules, budgets, subcontractors, regulatory requirements, invoicing, and client expectations. Serve as a senior technical resource while maintaining high standards of quality assurance and quality control. Build and strengthen relationships with existing clients while identifying new projects, service opportunities, and markets. Participate in client meetings, proposal development, RFP responses, fee preparation, and business development activities. Mentor junior and intermediate professionals through technical guidance, coaching, training, and professional development. Collaborate with T. Smith Engineering’s forensic, structural, mechanical, building science, and laboratory teams. Champion health and safety, sustainability, technical excellence, accountability, and responsive client service. Help grow the Environmental Department through service-line expansion, recruitment, process improvement, and staff development.

What You Bring

Seven to ten or more years of progressive experience in environmental consulting, occupational hygiene, or a closely related field. At least three years of experience independently managing environmental projects, clients, budgets, schedules, and multidisciplinary teams. A degree or diploma in environmental science, occupational hygiene, engineering, geology, earth sciences, or another relevant discipline. Demonstrated experience managing Phase I and Phase II ESAs for real estate, development, financing, or transactional due diligence. Working knowledge of Ontario’s Brownfields framework and experience with projects supporting Records of Site Condition under O. Reg. 153/04. Strong knowledge of O. Reg. 490/09 and the assessment and management of designated substances. Experience with indoor air quality, soil vapour, hazardous materials, occupational exposure, or environmental health investigations. Ability to manage projects from beginning to end, including scope, proposal, budget, schedule, fieldwork, regulatory requirements, reporting, invoicing, and closeout. Strong technical writing, data interpretation, report review, presentation, and client communication skills. Sound professional judgment and a strong commitment to accuracy, quality, health, and safety. Demonstrated success building client relationships and identifying additional project or service opportunities. Experience mentoring and developing junior and intermediate employees. A valid Ontario driver’s licence and the ability to travel to project sites as required.

Professional Designations

Having a Professional Engineer designation (P.Eng.) is a significant benefit and will be considered a strong asset, particularly for candidates who will lead multidisciplinary environmental, remediation, or regulatory projects. A Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH), Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Environmental Professional (EP), Qualified Person, or another relevant professional designation would also be considered an asset. Candidates are not required to hold every listed designation. We are interested in experienced professionals who bring strong technical credibility, leadership ability, sound judgment, and the capacity to help grow the department.

Industrial Hygienists Are Encouraged to Apply

Designated Substance Surveys. Occupational exposure assessments. Indoor air quality investigations. Asbestos, mould, lead, silica, and other hazardous materials. Exposure control plans and workplace health assessments. Remediation and abatement oversight. Sampling program development and laboratory data interpretation. Client advisory work and regulatory compliance. Industrial Hygienists who have developed broader environmental consulting, project management, leadership, or business development experience are strongly encouraged to apply.

Nice to Have

Experience designing or overseeing in situ or ex situ remediation programs. Experience with Environmental Compliance Approvals and regulatory submissions in Ontario. Qualified Person experience or eligibility under O. Reg. 153/04. Experience with Ontario’s excess soil requirements, including O. Reg. 406/19. Experience supporting insurance, legal, forensic, construction, property management, development, or real estate clients. Familiarity with GIS, environmental data management systems, laboratory data, or related technical platforms. An established network of clients, consultants, contractors, regulators, or industry contacts. Experience preparing proposals, responding to RFPs, estimating fees, and developing new business.
