Purpose

Maintenance of County Roads and properties and completion of various construction projects as assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a variety of vehicles and equipment as instructed by the Supervisor;
  • Operate mobile equipment such as tandem snowplows, loaders, graders, tractors, backhoes, and other types of equipment used for road surface construction, maintenance, and repair.
  • Safely use power and hand tools such as chain saws, jack hammers, mowers, generators, compressors, pumps, trimmers, hammers, wrenches, shovels.
  • Carry out circle checks on assigned vehicles and equipment. Perform associated maintenance (e.g., greasing, lightbulb replacements etc.).
  • Carry out a variety of general labour including but not limited to cutting brush, sign installation, traffic control, spray patching, pothole patching, bridge work, equipment and shop maintenance and cleaning etc.
  • Prepare and submit daily time sheets.
  • Carry out other duties as assigned.
  • Accept standby duty as assigned.

Working Conditions

The Operator reports for work at the Area Patrol Yard and receives their daily instructions from the Area Supervisor or their Backup. The person(s) occupying this position works in all types of weather and most of the working hours are spent outdoors. Heavy lifting and strenuous physical work for extended periods of time is associated with this position. During winter control months the incumbent of this position may be required to work shift work and some overtime will be necessary.

Internal Working Relationships

The Operator must maintain good working relationships with the Area Supervisor, Backup, Construction Supervisor, and other Department employees.

External Working Relationships

The Operator must maintain good working relationships with the public.

Knowledge and Skill

  • Grade 12 education or equivalent.
  • 3 years of satisfactory experience operating trucks and equipment.
  • Knowledge and ability to operate ½ ton trucks, tandem axles with plow equipment, packers, loader-backhoes, and payloaders.
  • The ability to operate graders, skid steers, or excavators would be an asset.
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s License, Class 'D' and 'Z' endorsement. Class ‘A’ and ‘Z’ endorsement would be considered an asset.
  • Clean Driver Abstract
